'50 Shades of Grey' Actor Buzz Heats Up: Gosling, Pattinson, Efron ... Oh My!

by Linda Sharps on April 26, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Okay, we're all up to speed on what Fifty Shades of Grey is all about, right? The steamy erotic trilogy by E.L. James that evolved from the author's Twilight fanfiction became a raging hard-on e-book publishing success, and reportedly triggered a studio bidding war before the film rights were acquired by Universal Pictures and Focus Features?

There's no word on when the movie version might get underway, but that hasn't stopped people from moving on to the next logical step when it comes to film adaptations of wildly popular novels: speculating on the casting. Particularly, who should play the role of wealthy, dominating 27-year-old Christian Grey.

We know Grey is young and insanely good looking. He's tall, dresses well, and looks extra awesome in a pair of jeans. And, of course, he's got those "blazing grey eyes" that Anastasia mentions about a kajillion times.

So who fits the bill? Check out this list of hunky, smoldering suggestions:

Robert Pattinson. Honestly, I'm just getting this one out of the way because I know some of you will kill me if I don't mention R-Patz. However, I don't think there's a chance in hell he'll be down for playing Edward Cullen yet again, even a porny, non-sparkly version.

Ian Somerhalder. This Vampire Diaries star was pretty eager to throw his hat in the ring, telling Ryan Seacrest that "I absolutely would be up for that. It could be amazing. It could be very, very amazing."

Chris Pine. He's for sure got the eyes for it, and he recently said that the movie "would be a hell of a choice for me, I think. It sounds like an interesting film.”

Zac Efron. I know he's all grown up and looking magically delicious these days, but I'm thinking he's still just a smidge too close to his High School Musical past.

Ryan Gosling. Um, yes please. Especially if the studio actually has the balls to make the film version even half as dirty as the book instead of turning it into an insipid rom-com.

Henry Cavill. This dude from The Tudors/Immortals is probably going to be red-hot in 2013, thanks to his Superman role.

Wes Bentley. Kind of a dark horse, but after seeing him in Hunger Games, I think he's got the chops for it. (HA GET IT CHOPS?)

Christan Bale. Too old for the character, I know. But you guys, Christian Grey is totally Christian Bale from American Psycho. Maybe Grey could be played by musician Miles Fisher, who did this amazing video:

Who would you like to see as Christian Grey on the big screen?

Looking at these choices, Chris Pine.  Yummy.  I don't think it's possible for this movie to be anywhere near as sexy as the book.

Although Christian Bale was the first to come to mind for the role, I think - of all the choices - Henry Cavill is the best fit. He has the acting chops to support the role, and just enough smoldering vulnerability to do Christian Grey justice.
