What's entertaining about "good" mothers?
As a mom, I don't want to turn on the TV and see mothers who always feed their kids balanced meals and never lose their tempers or send somebody to school in a shirt with a ketchup stain on the front. I want to see moms I can relate to: Moms who love their kids and really, really try to be good moms but still screw up a lot of the time.
You know, actual human being-type moms.
That's why I love every single TV mom on this list. None of them are bad moms, but none of them are perfect moms. All of them, however, make me laugh -- and isn't having a mom who makes you laugh more important than having a mom who irons your underwear?
1. Lucy Ricardo (I Love Lucy). By today's helicopter parenting standards, Lucy Ricardo probably would be accused of child neglect. (Little Ricky sure did spend a lot of time with Mrs. Trumbull.) That said, Lucy was a mom who'd do ANYTHING for her son -- dress up like Superman and hide outside a 3rd story window, play a flying, cackling witch in a school play. This clip is the perfecte example: Little Ricky is learning to play the drums, and Lucy is determined to be supportive even if she and (big) Ricky go bonkers from the beat.
2. Roseanne Conner (Roseanne). I will be forever grateful to Roseanne for supplying what's got to be one of the all-time best "mom" quotes ever: "This is why some animals eat their young." Of course the only thing Roseanne really had in common with a wild animal mother was that mama bear instinct -- anybody who messed with one of her cubs would be sorry!
3. Nancy Botwin (Weeds). In today's economy, what single mother hasn't considered turning to a life of crime to feed her family? Even though they don't always see it, everything Nancy does is for her kids' sake -- even the occasional hook-up with a hot bartender (if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy!).
4.Peggy Bundy (Married with Children). Just because she didn't cook or clean doesn't mean Peg didn't adore her kids! She wasn't lazy, she was just raising Kelly and Bud to be self-sufficient. (Or something. Pass the bon-bons!)
5. Arlene Fowler (True Blood). Poor Arlene! How much can one little redheaded waitress deal with? Evil husband, possessed (?) baby, vampire co-workers ... of course she's going to seem a bit emotionally unhinged from time to time. Still, she never gives up the fight. Whatever or whomever she's up against, Arlene is always a spitfire -- especially when it comes to her kids' safety.
Who's your favorite dysfunctional TV mom?
