Happy April 20th, or as it's become known to many people, 420, the day celebrated by pot smokers around the world. You can read about the origins of 420 here, or you can simply lie back and contemplate the majesty of the universe ... and wonder how they get that creamy white stuff between the Oreo cookie halves, anyway. Is it, like, squirted there, or—? So freaky, man.
Personally, it's been several years since I've imbibed (having kids is such a buzzkill), but no judgment here—if you're observing 420 in the traditional manner, perhaps you're looking to make your holiday even more meta. If you indulge at 4:20 p.m. on 4/20 while ALSO watching a movie expressly created for enjoyment under herbally-enhanced conditions, what happens? I don't know, but I suspect it involves fractals.
Without further ado, 7 stoner movies custom-designed for April 20:

Up in Smoke. You can't have a list like this without mentioning Up in Smoke—it's basically the Holy Grail of baked cinema. Made in 1978, Cheech and Chong launched the genre.

Dazed and Confused. Writer/director Richard Linklater's quintessential coming-of-age movie about stoned suburban teen culture in 1970's Texas. Notable mention goes to the soundtrack and Matthew McConaughey's awesomely sleazy mustache.

The Big Lebowski. Technically this Coen Brothers classic isn't a stoner film except, like, for the deep-down Dudeness to which we can all, like, abide, man.

Super Troopers. Hailed by many for the opening sequence of buzzed teens being hassled by the highway patrol, which has been described as one of the greatest scenes in stoner movie history.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Two pothead title characters try to indulge their munchies at White Castle, and hilarity ensues when they can't find the restaurant. Special appearance by a hitchhiking, high-on-ecstasy Neil Patrick Harris.

Pineapple Express. Seth Rogen's comedic chops are on full display in this ridiculous (but legitimately funny) stoner buddy comedy.

Soul Plane. As one IMDB reviewer put it, "Somebody decided to make a really, really bad 'black version' of Airplane that ran out of humor after the first twenty minutes and instead spent all of its time insulting the intelligence of the audience and the cast. This movie managed to violate the laws of physics by sucking and blowing at the same time. If nothing else, it deserves to be remembered for that accomplishment." Yes. This is a terrible, terrible movie. But my bet is that under juuuuuust the right conditions, if you know what I mean, it's actually pants-wettingly hilarious. Also: Snoop Dogg.
What movies would you add to this list?
