Even though I'd never seen a single episode, nor had I read the books, I was so convinced I was going to love Game of Thrones I went ahead and bought the first season when it was released earlier this month. Not only did I get a nice discount on the DVD set (Amazon's still offering it for 43% off, last I checked), I was right: I LOVE THIS SHOW. I love it so much I'm trying to make it last, instead of barreling through all 5 discs in one epic viewing marathon.
Which is to say, I'm only up to episode 6, but I know what's coming. I accidentally got spoilered on the big season one shocker last year when I read about it online—but if I hadn't been spoilered before, HBO's just-released poster for season 2 certainly would have done the job.
In fact, here's your official warning: if you haven't finished season one, don't read any further! And by all means, do NOT look at the (incredibly awesome) season 2 poster!
Ready to see the poster?
Are you sure?
Absolutely positive?
Okay, then:
Yep, that would be Lord Stark's head on a stick. Starksicle! You've got to love how HBO has not only been fearless about killing off major characters in Game of Thrones, they've apparently decided that if you haven't caught up with the first season, TOO BAD FOR YOU. The network can do as it likes.
While I already knew that Sean Bean's character wasn't long for the world, it's still pretty shocking to see his disembodied head. Since I haven't actually watched the penultimate Ned-killing episode yet, I didn't know how he died—but I guess I do now. Sheesh.
The second season premiere is coming right up, since Game of Thrones returns on Sun., April 1. HBO has released descriptions of the first five shows in season 2, including this blurb about the April 1 episode titled “The North Remembers."
As Robb Stark and his northern army continue the war against the Lannisters, Tyrion arrives in King's Landing to counsel Joffrey and temper the young king's excesses. On the island of Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon plots an invasion to claim his late brother’s throne, allying himself with the fiery Melisandre, a strange priestess of a stranger god. Across the sea, Daenerys, her three young dragons and khalasar trek through the Red Waste in search of allies, or water. In the North, Bran presides over a threadbare Winterfell, while beyond the Wall, Jon Snow and the Night’s Watch must shelter with a devious wildling.
Yeah, there's no way I can wait another year for season 2 to come out on DVD—which means I've got to add HBO back into our entertainment budget. Damn you, wily network executives, with your quality programming, impressive acting talent, and adorable direwolves!
Are you excited for season 2 of Game of Thrones? Do you think HBO should have picked a less-spoilery image for the poster?

If you've read the book series you know NOBODY is safe! LOVE the Season 2 poster!
so excited!! i love game of thrones!!!
Like pp's have said. Its NOT the network. The AUTHOR is ruthless about his main characters. I love A song of Ice and Fire.
Read all the books. I am so freakin' excited for the next season of this show!
Ms. Sharps needs to READ THE EFFIN' BOOKS before she writes about the show again. GAH. HBO has precisely nothing to do with the plot...and that's the way it should be!
Ms Sharps, HBO and the producers of the show are staying true to George Martins books. He does HORRIBLE things to his characters right from the git go.Especially the honorable ones. I literally threw the book across the room when Ned Stark died and thought about not picking it up again. Now,Ive read all of them and am eagerly awaing the last that George Martin is writing. I love the show!
You ladies are awesome for pointing out what I was going to: It's George R.R. Martin, who wrote the book, that is fearless about killing off the characters, NOT HBO. Though I find it pretty awesome that HBO is mostly staying true to the book series. Even if I hadn't seen season one, this poster wouldn't have been a spoiler. I've read the books, I know who's still alive and who's not. I expected Ned to die. Just as I expect some of the other major characters to die as well. Honestly, if they had done anything less, I would have been a bit pissed. The ice and fire series isn't all sunshine and rainbows. And that's how I like it!
