I love the Material Girl as much as the next Millennial who grew up doing dance recitals to "Like a Prayer," but sometimes -- lately, especially -- Madonna comes off like such a self-obsessed megalomaniac. Yeah, she's the Queen of Pop, but her fake-accented, condescending attitude (like telling 20/20's Cynthia McFadden to look up the word "reductive") is still a real turn-off. She also always seems to have a knack for making comments on a fellow star all about ... her. That is, until now.
Speaking out for the first time about Whitney Houston's death the other day, Madonna actually showed some humility! Incredible! You should probably brace yourself for this, because I swear, I've never heard words like this tumble from Madge's mouth.
Madonna told U.K. paper The Sun about her reaction to her peer's death a little over a month ago now ...
I, probably like everybody else, was hit by this shocking sense of disbelief — especially with Whitney Houston. ... One thing I was struck by with Whitney Houston is I remember she sort of came out as a singer around the same time I did. I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, 'Oh my God. She’s such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.' I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence.”
More from The Stir: Celine Dion Is Surprisingly Frank About Whitney Houston’s Death
Whaaaat?! Crazy. This might be the first time ever that Madge has actually admitted to being envious or not as great as another pop icon. I've pretty much been under the impression that she has always felt superior to everyone -- especially other lady icons -- in pop music. But for once, she's admitting she can't really sing all that well (dancing has always been much more her "thing"), and beyond that, she actually is 'fessing up to having envied Whitney! Wow! A.) I'm seriously impressed, and B.) This speaks VOLUMES about Whitney's tremendous talent, huh?
And oh, maybe there's a C. ... At 54 years old, has Madonna finally grown up, or is this just a one-off circumstance? Either way, I guess I'll feel less annoyed the next time she starts up her egomaniacal shtick. Because at least now we know she's capable of real emotion and humility.
Are you surprised by Madonna's reaction to Whitney Houston's death?

OMG she's from a Catholic family in Detroit. The accent is FAKE!
You generalise too much! Accents are personal and are connected to your ear (believe it or not) and how good a mimic you are. I moved to New York for 3 years when I was 26 , puberty long expired! My accent became extremely US! When I returned to UK I definitely spoke with an American accent for a long time. . Now, years on, when I visit the US
my US accent returns whilst I'm there. Similarly I have family members who moved to Canada in their late 20's. They all have Canadian accents. However when they visit UK their accents become mixed & more English again whilst here. Madonna is no different!!
Why do all of the articles on this site seem like they're written by catty teenage girls?
Im not at all surprised. While Madonna once got on my nerves as well I now see her as inspirational. She's a true, hard-working, survivor and has not let the stardom steal her goals in her private life a so many others do and have. Compiled w the genuinely "humane" and loving heart that she has as a parent and a good one at that, Id say the main thing left is to maybe tone it down a notch on the sarcasm from time to time.. Madonna you ROCK inside and out! You GO girl!
