Photo credit: Peter MountainAm I anxiously awaiting Gore Verbinski's remake of The Lone Ranger starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp as Tonto? Of course I am. OF COURSE I AM! Now, to be fair, I should mention that Johnny Depp could be starring as Hoss Cartwright in a remake of Bonanza and my expectations would be equally high -- he is, after all, Johnny Depp. But producer Jerry Bruckheimer just leaked the first photo of Depp and Hammer in full costume and makeup, and from the looks of it, Depp has created yet another completely unique, utterly eccentric, and dangerously mesmerizing character in the grand tradition of Jack Sparrow, The Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, and Barnabas Collins.
The best part of all? Apparently in this version of The Lone Ranger, Tonto is the one holding the reigns ...
And it's all due to Depp's vision. In his words:
I remember watching [the TV series] as a kid ... and going: "Why is the [expletive] Lone Ranger telling Tonto what to do?" ... When the idea came up [for the movie], I started thinking about Tonto and what could be done in my own small way try to

Johnny Depp's characters have been getting weirder and weirder and frankly downright scary. I think he looks bizarre in the picture, which I think he'd take as a compliment since it obviously what he's been going for the last 10 years or so. Its too bad he feels he has to be so outrageous because he's really a pretty good actor who doesn't need all the weird get ups to succeed.
I think he will be outstanding, especially given his heritage. It will be great to see this new take on Tonto.
Hmmm............
I don't know about the crow on his head, but that is actually pretty historically correct war make-up for certain tribes. I just love him.
As much as Johnny wants to put Native Americans in a better light, I would think that he would spearhead the effort to get a real Native American to play one on screen instead of just playing one himself.
it's not his "vision"... it was his EGO. I think Mr. Depp has hit his second childhood, btw. What's with playin dress up in all his latest roles??? Eh, I lost respect for him anyways when he dropped his native Kentucky accent and stole a fake french/english/drunkish one.
I had a crush on Tonto as a child.
I remember back in the day (I'm talking 21 Jump Street days, that's how long ago) reading he is native american in some capacity, I forget which though, it's been so darn long since he was plastered over every inch of my wall LOL But I get why he feels he can portray a native american. I also get why he does these odd roles, it's not ego, ego is being brad pitt and carrying a movie solely on how ya look. JD always took the oddball parts to avoid that and instead his performance be the focus. (again, I'm going back 20 years or so on this) I remember thinking --- holy hell he's hot and doesn't want to be hot which makes him even hotter LOL
