The Real Reason Robert Pattinson Won't Be in a 'Twilight' Sequel

GossipMonger 142

Twilight fans, you've probably heard the talk about a potential sixth installment in the film series, right? The rumors kicked into high gear recently when Lionsgate (which recently bought Summit Entertainment) co-chair Rob Friedman revealed that if Stephenie Meyer wants to write a new Twilight installment, the studio will "be there to support her” with yet another addition to the movie franchise.

Meyer's not making any promises either way, teasing that while she's not super drawn to vampires at the moment, "I'm not going to say no." (Yeah, I wouldn't rule out a KAJILLION dollar paycheck either.) Interestingly, Robert Pattinson also recently weighed in on the possibility of a Twilight sequel—and he brought up a very good reason for why he probably won't be cast in any future films.

In the books, Edward Cullen's true age is . . . well, actually, I'm not totally sure. He's like 104 in the first book, right? But he's got the eternal physical appearance of a 17-year-old. Robert Pattinson the actor, on the other hand, is 25.

The age disparity hasn't been a big deal before now, especially since the first movie came out four years ago. Going forward, however, Pattinson himself points out that while he'd be curious what Stephenie Meyer might write,

I would think I’d be too old [for a sequel]. I’m already too old. It might be kind of interesting — they might recast me.

Recast Edward Cullen? Sure, Lionsgate, go for it! If you want a hundred thousand angry fans to rip you limb from limb, that is.

Ironically, when Pattinson was first cast as Edward the reaction was . . . well, less than favorable, let's say that. He got
hate mail, the Internet blew up with people arguing about the choice, and one rather dedicated person posted a petition directed to Summit Entertainment protesting Pattinson's eyebrows, of all things.

In fact, whoever created that petition had
someone else in mind for the role: french actor Gaspard Ulliel.

So who do you think I, and almost everybody else, wants as Edward? Gaspard Ulliel of course. He IS Edward. Though he mostly acts in France, he does have a large fan base all over the world. He is much better looking than Pattinson, and plus, he's French. That means he has a beautiful French look about him, and best of all, no FREAKY EYEBROWS!

Hmm, what do you think?

I'm not sure I see it, personally, but it doesn't matter anyway—Monsieur Ulliel is 27 years old. It's a little depressing to think of actors who are more than a decade younger than me being too old for a role, but there's no way around it,
you can't play a 17-year-old forever.

Even if Stephenie Meyer did have a fifth
Twilight book in the works, by the time it was published and was adapted for film Pattinson would definitely have outgrown the part. Which leaves two questions: as a fan, would you suspend disbelief in order to watch a 30-year-old play a teenager, or would you prefer to see a new actor as Edward?

(As for me, I'd choose option #3, Leave the Franchise Alone, but since when has Hollywood ever done that?)

What do you think, is Robert Pattinson too old to keep playing Edward?

I think Edward and Bella's story had been completed.  If there were to be more, it should focus on Renesmee and Jacob.

I agree with pp I would however love for her to finish Midnight Sun, Twilight from Edwards perspective, I'd read the whole thing again from his point of view.

As for films I think we're done.

There shouldn't be another sequel. It's overkill. I love the Twilight series but enough is enough. Also if they use anyone else besides Robert Pattison it is going to make the movie even more lame. I hate sequels where they don't use the same person.

Well, originally, Stephenie Meyers wanted to cast Henry Cavill as Edward. However, due to his age, the studio objected. I believe he was in his mid-20s at the time. Thus, Robert Pattinson must be too old to continue playing the same role too.

I think it's funny how much people love Robert Pattinson now when just before Twilight, they thought he was the ugliest thing to have graced God's green earth. When Twihards found out that he had been cast as Edward, they flipped! After all, Edward is supposed to be very handsome and, to be honest, Robert Pattinson looks like he was beat in the face with a frying pan. Even I was shocked - though I was also shocked at other casting choices as well.

If there is another sequel...yes I will watch.  But only if R Pattz is Edward again.  This other guy doesn't even look right.  I too don't care for sequels unless the originals are in it.

It will not be the same if Edward is not played by R Pattz an Bella is not K Stew however Im all for a 6th movie as long as its a take off from where the last one leaves off an we see how the whole Renesmee and Jacob thing play out!!

I think Edward and Bella made Twilight saga completed, however I would like to see Midnight Sun from Edward point of view.
