Nicolas Cage in 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance'

Every time I've seen a commercial for the second Ghost Rider movie, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, I literally think to myself, What the hell is Nicolas Cage doing? Isn't this the same striking screenwriter from Leaving Las Vegas? What's he doing playing some wacked out skeleton riding a motorcycle? Sigh. Whether or not I understand what's going on here, the movie hits theaters nationwide today.

Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance follows Cage's character Johnny Blaze (the ghost rider) as he teams up with a group of rebel monks to save a young boy from the devil.

While Ghost Rider 2 is about as subtle as a sledgehammer and positively drenched in pyrotechnics and car chases, it's also rather fun and, like all the best comic books, a little cleverer than first impressions suggest.

Nicolas Cage's return to the blazing bike saddle is a distinct improvement on its dire predecessor, although that is hardly a blistering recommendation of its quality.
