I guess I wouldn't go so far as to say there might be some good news about Whitney Houston's untimely passing, but the latest revelations about how she died may offer comfort to those who were close to her, particularly those who were in the Beverly Hilton hotel with Houston on Saturday.
Despite early reports that Houston had died by slipping beneath the water in her bathtub in a drug-induced stupor, family sources claim that LA coroner officials have said that it's unlikely that Houston drowned. Based on the lack of water in her lungs, the current theory is that she succumbed to a fatal combination of prescription drugs and alcohol before sinking into her tub.
If this is true, I can only imagine there must be a sense of relief for those who may have felt that she could have been saved—if only she'd been found just a little bit earlier.
The report is coming from TMZ, who cite family sources briefed by Los Angeles County Coroner officials. Officials allegedly told the singer's family that there was not enough water in her lungs for her to have drowned, and that she likely overdosed on Xanax and other prescription medications along with alcohol. A host of sedatives and anti-anxiety medications were reportedly found in Houston's room, including Valium, Xanax, Lorazepam and more.

It's somehow less awful to think that Houston was beyond help before she slipped underwater (maybe particularly so for Whitney's aunt Mary Jones, who was reportedly the one to find her body and perform CPR), but I honestly don't know what seems worse: the idea that she was on an illegal drug binge of some kind, or that her body gave out under the strain of too many medications prescribed under a doctor's care.
I hadn't really heard of prescription drug toxicity before Heath Ledger's death, but it may be that Houston died of the same thing. When I think of accidental overdoses I tend to think of heroin or other hardcore recreational drugs, but it's obvious that the right (well, wrong) combination of FDA-approved pharmaceuticals can bring on the same tragic result. According to the CDC, overdoses of prescription pain medications are up 90% since 1999, and accidental overdoses now kill more Americans than car crashes.
Man, that's scary. I had no idea.
Of course, there's no official word yet. Investigators will be examining Houston's behavior in the hours and days before she was found in the bathtub, and although an autopsy was performed Sunday, the results of a toxicology test are likely to take several weeks.

It's a hell of a sad story however you look at it, and I hope for Houston's family's sake the investigation is over with quickly and everyone has the information they need to start making peace with the situation.
Do you think it's at all less tragic to know that Whitney Houston may have overdosed rather than drowned?

This is very sad. Honestly, I think that her body giving out under the strain of too many medications prescribed under a doctor's care is worse. At least if she went on an illegal drug binge, and was trying to self medicate for whatever reason, it was under no fault but her own. But to be under a DOCTORS care and given all of those meds, well, now there is a problem. I do not judge her for the decisions that she made. It was her life and her body. She could do with it what she wished. But for a doctor to prescribe her all of those medications given her history of substance abuse was irresponsible. And now the world is dimmer because of the loss of such a great and talented artist.
I think it's tragic either way. I think the whole situation in Hollywood is tragic. If this were Joe down the street, it's far less likely that he/she would be allowed to spiral into self-destruction with no accountability. He/she would have been arrested for possession, sent to rehab, counseling, etc. He/she wouldn't be allowed to continue working and partying and living it up with no repercussions - it would be violating parole or something.
But, celebrities have an uncanny ability to get ahold of, and get away with, things that the average person could not. And because they are not held accountable for their actions, they are allowed to continue self-destructive behavior until it finally kills them.
And then we honor them for it.
What kind of a message does that send to other celebrities - and non-celebrities for that matter?
She is dead can we please move on
How can one person get so many prescriptions for anxiety?! It seems like every time a famous person dies from an accidental overdose, it is because they were able to find a doctor willing to give them whatever they wanted,NOT what they NEEDED!
no, a person lost their life any way you look at it. There are more and more Americans addictied to perscription drugs than heroin now, that fact makes me sick.
Most prescription drug addicts "shop doctors"...so one doctor doesn't give all the prescriptions, but the the patient has several doctors they rotate through so no one will become suspicious and cut them off. Just like MIchael Jackson, there is always someone starstruck and money hungry enough to do the wrong things. From all accounts, poor Whitney has been battling addictions for a very very very long time. Even her daughter has been caught doing cocaine last year. It is so terribly sad. I can't imagine her devastation at seeing her DD do drugs and realizing she has destroyed her beautiful voice just to get high. finally, as a spiritual person, I don't like how it is represented that God called her home. No, Whitney booked her own arrangements for that trip home.
It is horrible for her family either way.
