Pretty much the ONLY person on the Internet who didn't weigh in this week on M.I.A. throwing the bird during her performance with Madonna at the Super Bowl half-time show was Madonna herself. But that all changed Friday morning when the Material Girl herself candidly told Ryan Seacrest what she thought of the flip-off.
Guess what. Madonna wasn't happy. Here's what she said about it:
I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity. ... It seemed negative. ... It’s such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place.
I'm sorry, but I have to ask: Is this the real Madonna speaking or a boring, way-too-serious, stuck-up version of herself? Because the Material Girl that I've grown up watching isn't afraid to push buttons even in times of "good energy and positivity." She isn't above artists expressing themselves in provocative ways. And she certainly doesn't find fault with irrelevant details in entertainment (ahem, random world peace sign at the end of her performance!).
I'm actually shocked by Madonna's reaction to M.I.A.'s middle finger: Overall, the performance got nothing but an amazing response (see: my Twitter and Facebook feeds where everyone proclaimed it the "Best Super Bowl half-time of their entire existence"). That she would say something bad about one minor second of it seems -- to borrow her word -- "negative" to me. If anything, it got people talking about something other than the fact that she tripped and almost fell off the bleacher halfway through. You'd think she'd be at least a little tolerant of it.
Are you surprised at Madonna's reaction?

I saw the show and enjoyed it, as did my friends, but I have heard nothing but negative reviews. So where do you get the idea people thought it was the best half time show ever?
I'm having trouble deciding if people who say the show was great are being sarcastic or not. I mean she was lip syncing, her dancing looked like exactly was she is, an old lady trying to dance like a twenty year old and that song L-U-V Madonna whatever was so self serving and just arrogant. Worst thing I've ever seen, like on the verge of being embarassing. I didn't even see the finger until I saw it on the internet, maybe the censors at my local station caught it in time. As far as Madonna's reaction to it, I agree with other posters that she's just mad that someone else is getting attention. Jealous, washed up hag. She hasn't had a hit in 20 years, she needs to just go away.
I am surprised at her response. Madonna has always done things to the extreme that didn't involve class.
Coming from a woman who release a "coffee-table book" called Sex, that featured her and others in various sex acts? Slightly. (please note that this is dripping with sarcasm)
Madonna may have released a coffee table book..but it was your choice to buy it... not thrown up at you on tv... Madonna..may have done "out there" things.BUT ..she has never been disrespectful for the sake of disrespect or sabotaged a show... She cussed on David Letterman and when she realized she had offended him she offered several apologies to him. Before the Superbowl she had made it clear that she wanted it to be very "family" she wanted parents who grew up with her to be watching with kids and not have to worry... Say what you want about her but she has never apologised for evolving and learning and growing...And for her to be ticked is something I understand
M.I.A. was rude. What she did was uncalled for.
