Daniel Radcliffe in 'The Woman in Black'I'm not one for scary movies. I just can't get over the fact that it's all "pretend" as I sit there squeamishly staring at the screen through my fingers every time something goes bump. However, I could definitely see myself making an exception and heading to the theater this weekend for Daniel Radcliffe's first big-screen venture post-Potter, The Woman in Black, debuting in theaters nationwide today.
Directed by James Watkins, The Woman in Black follows Radcliffe's character Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer, as he travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost of a scorned woman who's terrorizing the locals. It sounds freakishly scary, but definitely a must-see. I'm so overly curious to know if Radcliffe can pull off another character besides Harry. See what the critics have to say in their The Woman in Black reviews, here:
Claudia Puig, USA Today:
As opposed to modern horror flicks like the Saw movies, where gruesome violence can almost blunt fears, The Woman in Black is a tasteful, old-school frightener, emphasizing suspense and foreboding over blood and guts.
Richard Corliss, Time Magazine:
The Woman in Black is a welcome addition to the old canon; renouncing innovation, embracing anachronism, it’s almost The Artist of ghost movies. To anyone who fancies throwback stories of the supernatural, there’s nothing so appealing as a well-preserved corpse.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone:
The Woman in Black doesn't break new ground, but in its suggestions of fine film ghost stories, from The Innocents to The Others and The Orphanage, it works you over with riveting restraint.
Dana Stevens, Slate Magazine:
I'm well aware that The Woman in Black's embrace of old-school creaky-floorboards scare tactics may have hardcore horror aficionados scoffing. All I know is, when I had to walk down a dark hallway at home the night I came back after seeing it? Reader, I ran.
Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News:
Every child actor (and stage parent) could take a lesson from Daniel Radcliffe -- Harry himself -- who has approached his post-Potter career with remarkable poise ... Though Woman never rises above its status as a traditional genre thriller, that's perfectly fine. It was made with intelligence and commitment, and it chieves its goal: to keep us looking over our shoulders long after we've left.

Not a Radcliffe fan, but definitely going to see this movie. I'm a HUGE fan of classy, old-school scary movies - not the blood-bath torture flicks that are passing for 'scary' these days. I saw the trailer for this months ago, been waiting ever since!
Im not a fan of his nor do I dislike him, but I wil watch this movie. I love love horror
I'm so excited to see this -- I love classic scary movies and always hate when a scary movie turns out to be a gruesome, buckets of blood torture porn flick.
This movie looks good but I don't know if I can bring myself to watch it....I get freaked out easy lol!
I.CAN.NOT.WAIT.!!!!! Big fan of his and horror movies so bonus! lol
He looks sooo good in this movie. I might catch in when it comes on TV lol. Not a horror fan >.<
I wasn't really into Harry Potter, but I do think Daniel Radcliffe is a great actor and I'm excited for him. The movie looks great. I HATE slasher, gorey movies and I prefer suspense over bloody graphics anyday. Not to mention Daniel is pretty nice to look at ;-)
I'm not a fan, but then again i'm not a fan of many actors, they are just people who act to me. but with that said this movie defiantly looks good and he is a good actor so ill most likely see this in theaters. btw I didnt recognize it was him at first lol
I am absolutely planning to see it! I love a good suspenseful horror flick!
