Controversy swirling around Madonna feels so retro, doesn't it? Yet just a week ago, Madge was in the news for bashing Lady Gaga (or, depending on how you look at it, making some fair observations), and now that she took home a Golden Globes award for Best Original Song on Sunday, she's been accused of narcissism and desperation by someone close to the British monarchy.
I'm referring, of course, to Elton John's bitchy, loud-mouthed husband. Apparently David Furnish considers Madonna quite the royal pain in the ass.
Furnish hasn't exactly been much of a Madonna fan in the past (he once snidely referred to her as a "lip-syncher"), but he definitely didn't bother holding back his emotions after the Golden Globes when Madonna's song "Masterpiece" beat Elton John's "Hello Hello":
Madonna. Best song???? Fuck off!!! (...) Madonna winning Best Original Song truly show how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.
Whoah. If you ask me, it's far more embarrassing and desperate for Furnish to have stooped to this level—on Facebook, for crying out loud—instead of having some dignity and keeping his flap shut about the whole thing. I mean, it's fine to snark about Madge behind the scenes, but this kind of childish public outburst just ends up making Elton John look like a poor loser.
It may be that Furnish's comments had more to do with saving face after confidently declaring before the ceremony that "Madonna hasn't got a f---ing chance" in the Best Original Song competition, but either way: Elton, it's time to slap a muzzle on your spouse. Hang a Material Girl dartboard poster, boycott her movies, take a big steaming crap on a pile of her platinum CDs if you have to, but for god's sake, avoid the public catfight.
Not only is it wildly disrespectful to insinuate that everyone who won a Golden Globe didn't earn it by merit, but as far as beefs go, this one's pretty laughable. I'm just saying, Elton John's husband vs Madonna doesn't exactly match up to, say, the east coast-west coast hip hop rivalry.
Besides, Madonna comes out looking like the good guy in this whole thing, being as how she issued an impressively gracious statement backstage at the Globes:
[I hope Elton] speaks to me for the next couple of years. He’s been known to get mad at me, so I don’t know. He’s brilliant, and I adore him, so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad.
Yep, points to Madonna. Whether or not you think she deserved the Best Original Song honor, she's clearly got her PR game face on for this particular snarkfest. If I were Elton, I'd be carefully considering the marital pros and cons of changing Furnish's Facebook password.
What do you think about David Furnish's comments about Madonna? Deserved, or deranged?

Nothing like a sore loser.
Ms. Sharp, If you think Madonna's statement backstage was gracious then you yourself are probably not a very nice person. It was a direct invitation to a cat fight. I also don't think slapping a muzzle on a spouse is a valid or acceptable answer to anything I don't care whether it is a man slapping one on a woman or a man slapping one on a man. Maybe you just don't like the idea that Sir Elton has a spouse that is allowed to speak his opinion. Maybe you don't like the idea that Elton John's spouse is a man. The truth is that Madonna is narcissistic & rude. There are gracious ways to handle that type of a statement to the press even if you don't mean it. We see it after every awards show by at least one or two of the winners. All that statement proves is that Madonna thinks she is above commonly held standards of courtesy & behavior just like she always has.
I personally think much higher of Elton then that and agree that his spouse did him no favor. Such a shame.
