Been waiting with bated breath for news of a sequel to the smash comedy hit, Bridesmaids? Well, I've got good news and bad news for you.
Even though Universal would absolutely LOVE to release a Bridesmaids 2 and see a box office payday equal or greater than the $288 mil. worldwide they made back in May -- cha-ching! -- Wiig has told The Hollywood Reporter, "We aren't working on that. [Co-writer Annie Mumolo] and I aren't planning a sequel. We are writing something else." And a source close to Judd Apatow has said that if Wiig and Mumolo weren't fully participating in a sequel, the producer isn't interested. Wow! As much as I would love to see another installment of Bridesmaids -- mostly because I adore Melissa McCarthy! -- this is awesome news.
GOOD for Wiig, Mumolo, and Apatow for sticking to their guns and not wanting to compromise their integrity just to cash in. I swear, lazy Hollywood has been going down the toilet lately, relying on remakes and sequels way too much, and it's getting old, tired, and pathetic. "Writing something else" is exactly what brilliant women like Wiig and Mumolo need to be focusing their energies on -- not retracing their footsteps on something that could very easily end up a dreadful direct-to-DVD mess.
This isn't to say that there isn't any promise for a Bridesmaids sequel altogether. Apatow's official statement was:
The key is we have to come up with an idea that is as good or better than the first one. We don't want to do it unless it can be great. I don't think anyone has had the brain space to think about it yet. Hopefully that can begin this year.
And if Universal can't hold their horses, they'll probably go ahead and make something terrible that ends up being along the lines of Cruel Intentions 2. Either way, maybe there is hope for the superfans ... and the studio. But without the real brains behind the film attached, movie-goers would be wise to stay away.
Do you want to see Bridesmaids 2 get made? Would you care if it was done without Kristen Wiig/Annie Mumolo/Judd Apatow?

I would like to see a sequel (love the original!), but only with the same writers and director, and only if it's GOOD. Since sequels tend to suck, I really hope they don't even try.
