The original Housewives series, The Real Housewives of Orange County, recently added a new cast member to their ever-evolving group of tanned, toned ladies, and -- gasp -- she's a brunette! Her name is Heather Dubrow. She's a former actress (aren't they all?), and she's married to a prominent plastic surgeon in Newport Beach (aren't they all?). The craziest part of all? She actually seems kind of cool and sort of intelligent.

Vicki is going to hate her.

Well, to be fair, Vicki hates everyone except Tamara, who, I think, secretly, she kind of hates. Or at least wants to totally control. Or be. Or skin like last year's Versace. But that's besides the point. Heather, who originally hails from New York -- and wants you to know it -- is going to have a little bit of a hard time fitting in with the ladies. Not just because she's raven-haired and the new girls are always hated, but because she seems really direct and like she'll always speak her mind. You know how well that goes over with the girls. They want everyone to be like Peggy Tanous (who, randomly, doesn't appear to be in season 7) and just agree and kiss butt.

I don't think that's going to be the case with Heather. But whatevs, it'll make for good TV.

To be honest, I think the key to Orange County's success is the fact that they change their cast members so often. Vicki is the only original one left, yet the show is still interesting and watchable. New York, on the other hand, was a bloodbath this past season. It had the most boring, made-up storylines ever (Ramona thought she was pregnant? Please!), and by the end, I could barely watch. Even though I did.

Throwing a new girl into the lion's den each season keeps things fresh, keeps the drama running high. And Orange County has done a great job of doing that -- so things stay somewhat "compelling."

That, and the fact the O.C. women are the cattiest bunch of gals I ever did see.
