10 Reasons 2011 Was the Year of the Vampire

true blood castI know what you're thinking: Every year is the Year of the Vampire! Hey, I'm not gonna argue with you on that one. But this year has been exceptionally vamp-friendly, wouldn't you say? I mean, I can't think of another time when vampires so totally and completely dominated both the big and small screens, not to mention computer screens. And the merchandising! Once upon a time, it wasn't so easy to find vampire-themed socks or mixing bowls or toilet seat covers.

But that was back in the dark ages of vampire fandom, and if 2011 was any indication, we've come a long way, baby!

Here are 10 reasons why:

1. The box office was dominated by a movie featuring the gory birth of a vampire/human hybrid baby.

2. The hottest men in Hollywood? All play vampires. Robert Pattinson? Alexander Skarsgard? Stephen Moyer? That's what I'm talkin' about.

3. We learned that Nicolas Cage is, in fact, a vampire. For real. There's proof. Photographic evidence!

4. A woman who actually thinks she's a vampire -- and dresses like one, sort of, but more in a scary way than a hot way -- was immortalized in wax by Ripley's Believe it or Not.

5. Another woman who actually thinks she's a vampire attacked some old dude in Hooters and bit big chunks of skin off his face and neck.

6. Kids started reading books. On purpose. Like, for fun. (Only ones by Stefanie Meyer, but still.)

7. Something called a "Vampire Facelift" exists. Like Botox, but with blood. No, I'm not kidding.

8. Something called a "Vampire Cruise" exists. Like a regular cruise, but with vampires. No, I'm not kidding.

9. Johnny Depp filmed a Tim Burton-directed version of Dark Shadows, in which he will star as Barnabas. Happy dance, happy dance!!!

10. True Blood cocktails are all the rage. You know, using the True Blood in the bottles that you can buy. (Okay fine, it's actually blood orange-flavored soda, ya stinkin' killjoy. Whatever.)

Why do you think 2011 was the Year of the Vampire?
