It's been a little unclear how exactly they are turning What to Expect When You're Expecting, the "bible of American pregnancy," into a movie. However, when the A-list cast -- including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Elizabeth Banks -- was announced, it was obvious they weren't making a movie version of the book's frightening -- yet enlightening -- depiction of how the pregnant female body's internal organs get squished to nothing while an upside-down child grows into that painful position. In fact, with actresses who can deliver the humor like Banks and Diaz can, I've been hoping for a good comedy. Pregnancy is so humiliating, and our humiliation can be quite hilarious when it's done in a smart, real, authentic way, and when the story is delivered by awesome actresses.
The What to Expect When You're Expecting trailer was released today, so let's take a look and discuss whether or not we think this movie is going to deliver (no pun intended).
So what is the storyline in What to Expect When You're Expecting, the movie? Well, here's what we see in the trailer. Elizabeth Banks is pregnant and she is unkempt and frazzled and hormonal and can't wear heels. Cameron Diaz likes her pregnant rack because, you know, pregnancy is ALL about the boobs. (And she is from England? South Africa? Mars? Point being, there seems to be an accent.) Jennifer Lopez is adopting via Skype, very touching indeed. And the dads ... they are all kinda clueless and let their kids hurt themselves while they dude-up.
Hmmm.
Watch the What to Expect When You're Expecting trailer:
This movie sneak peek reminds me of those people who worry about the wedding and not the marriage. "All I wanted was the glow" is the opener. Really? That's what they think pregnant women worry about most? Pregnancy isn't like going to the prom, people! It's not some kind a red carpet adventure that leads to some glamorous event. Fulfilling, yes, glamorous, hell no. How sad and disappointing that a movie based on What To Expect, the books whose whole ethos is to ground expectant moms in reality, looks so shamelessly unrealistic.
On the bright side, I did laugh at the modern-day Gas 'n Sip that the playground has become for these dads (I love a good Say Anything reference). Maybe we can laugh at men for being more than hapless.
Anyway, I'm totally going to see it, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to feel good about it. What To Expect When You're Expecting opens in theaters May 11, 2012, just in time for Mother's Day.

Considering my midwife told me to stay far, far away from that book, I probably won't be seeing the movie :)
i have that book it drove me nuts lol but this looks hilarious ..
Not every book needs to be made into a movie...
LMFAO I can't wait to see this!! What an awesome cast of people! :D This is going to be hysterical!!!
I think it looks funny!! Definitely going to see this!
Pregnancy is not humiliating. And i probably won't be watching it because I don't particularly like how they're portraying pregnant women, and the book is pathetic to begin with.
