Lady Gaga Crushes Madonna With 'Marry the Night' (VIDEO)

by Sasha Brown-Worsham on December 1, 2011 at 9:36 PM

Watching 14 minutes of any musical artist is a lot to ask of an audience, yet that is exactly what Lady Gaga asks in her new video for "Marry the Night." And not since Michael Jackson's "Thriller" came out when I was just out of diapers have I been so willing to endure for an artist. Her new video is long and epic and yet it really works.

As with everything else Gaga does, the video pays homage to Madonna, replete with bedazzled jean jackets, pouty looks, and '80s hair. But she is so much cooler and harder than Madonna ever was. Gaga's passion and intensity are twice as strong, and her message is clearer and more vivid.

Where Madonna gave us party anthems, Gaga gives us her soul. See the video below:

Mother Monster says the video is about her first major disappointment, or "one of the worst days of my life." It was the day her first record label dropped her. As an aside, I bet they are kicking themselves hard right about now.

Of course, no one would sit through 14 minutes of boring talk with no purpose, and the song hit toward the end. It's a really great song. I am sure I will be adding it to my iPhone within the week. It has a great beat for running.

Lady Gaga may be some people's Madonna rip-off, but as someone who grew up on Madonna and has loved her for years, I actually think Gaga is far superior to Madonna. She manages to pay tribute to her while also surpassing her in talent and artistry.

The two might be similar and Gaga might be Madonna's heir, but Gaga is less pretentious than Madge. She wins every time, and while Madonna is a legend, Gaga's star is passing her more and more every day.

Do you think Gaga is better than Madonna?

As a parent of 11 old girl, I don't know what to think about Lady Gaga.

I was watching a Gaga performance with her that got WAY too sexual for my confort level.  (I left it on, knowing that turning it off would make it an even bigger deal.)

But her lyrics are good (the one's I've heard, anyway) -- uplifting even.

i've sat watching/listening to gaga with such an appreciation for her talent. i was talking to my younger sister who is in her mid 20's and her friends and i was explaining how madonna was a trailblazer in her time and it's good for her that she came along when she did because if she had to compete with gaga as a contemporary, she would not be able to hold a candle to her.

i was 12 when madonna hit the airwaves, and looking back, i'm sure my parents were shocked out of their mind when my friends and i wanted to sing a song about being touched "like a virgin" even though we weren't even sure what that meant, but it was fresh, fun, and new to us. it's typical.

GaGa better than the original and most important female artist in music history? Madonna broke barriers when it mattered. This is no Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Vogue, Ray of Light etc. Growing tired of GaGa

not gonna lie, i found the video pretty boring. just because it's long and cinematic does not mean it's on par with thriller.

I can appreciate Gaga's work, but I can't shake the idea that she's a mix of Madonna's sexuality and Marilyn Manson's shock factor with the pretensions of being the female Freddie Mercury (ex: her name comes from the Queen song "Radio Gaga"). I just feel like people give her a bit too much credit sometimes. Without the aforementioned artists, I doubt Gaga would be what she is now.

I can't imagine Gaga ever doing anything that will top Madonna. I do like her new songs, they're very 80's to me and I like that, but I'll always think of her as a copy, not an original. However; my kids think she's the bomb diddy and totally original so *shrugs*

You're kidding right? She can't surpass Madonna in anything, except for her vocal abilities, but Madonna never said she was a great singer. Madonna made MTV and the media cool. If anything, gaga tries way too hard and Madonna for most people, has been there done that.. nice to see homage from gaga, but there will only be ONE MADONNA! gaga can stick with the meat dresses!
