Aw, Miley Cyrus really, really wants us to know she's all grown up, now that she's all of 19 years old. After recently announcing to a crowd that she's, like, a huge f**kin' stoner, man (a comment her rep hilariously tried to explain as being "sarcastic" and "taken out of context"), apparently the drug controversy wasn't quite enough for her, because now she's courting political controversy with a video she released to her YouTube channel over the weekend.
In my opinion, there's nothing controversial about the video, which is a remix of "Liberty Walk" off her album Can't Be Tamed—except maybe for the idea that Miley Cyrus, girl billionaire, thinks a heavily auto-tuned pile of disco garbage has a shot at becoming some sort of anti-establishment anthem.
The new video for "Liberty Walk" does not include any images of Cyrus herself, but is made up of footage from various Occupy protests worldwide. As you might expect, there are lots of people holding signs, crowds marching, and more police beatings than you can shake a baton at. At the beginning of the video, a title page reads, "This is dedicated to the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in."
Here, take a look:
Perhaps not surprisingly, the video has angered some conservative one-time Cyrus fans, one of which wrote on her YouTube page:
Miley Cyrus is now banned from my house along with 30 other entertainment political wannabes. My kids are not allowed to have anything related to you or what you stand for.......and you know what? they actually said it to me that they lost interest in you and your cruddy music and movies and tv show.... Bah-bye Miley,....you get no more of my hard earned money you one percenter liar.
Oh man. No more overpriced Hanna Montana merchandise for THOSE kids. What a tragedy.
I guess I have to grudgingly hand it to Cyrus for making her support for OWS public, even though it was inevitable she'd piss off some of her fan base, but my god, this song is an abomination. There's just something really sad about taking footage of people being pepper sprayed and setting it to a house beat, you know?
Maybe this is Miley's way of saying it's time she's taken seriously, but it's so hard to do so when her behavior and music make it so incredibly clear she's still just a kid.
What do you think of the video?

It's a little late in the game, I think. I can't listen to the video because I'm at work (slave to the state...). But, the protesting stage of the OWS movement is kind of...old....at this point. They're not proving anything by camping out for months. They've made their point, now they need to get off the streets and start actually doing something about their demands (which, hopefully someone has figured out....because that part got very confusing as well.) Don't get me wrong, I support the movement...I think...if I'm right about what I think it's about. But, the marching and protesting and sitting around waiting to get beaten and pepper sprayed part is played out. And so is Miley. Move on, already. At this point, a theme song is just overkill.
I laughed hysterically to think that that mother banned Miley Cyrus from her children, from her home not because she dresses like a Ho, not because she's videotaped smoking Salvia, not because of all her other normal teen-like transgressions but because she made a video that is dedicated to people standing up for what they believe in. WAY TO GO MOM! Sheesh.
That's just weird! The song has a dance beat. I can't imagine somebody dancing to this song lol..Maybe if it were a different song, with a more serious beat....I dunno?? Just weird. I don't know much about her so don't like to judge her as a person (3 sons so no Hanna Montana lol).
Lmao @nancy
Sooboo - I am fully aware that they represent me. I am also fully aware that what "they" want is not entirely clear to most of the population. I know what I want out of the movement, and I know that it's part of what "they" are lobbying for. I'm not out there lobbying because I have to work, which is why I refer to the group as a "they". My point is that the actual physical protest is played out. At this point, there is no logic or reason for the group to continue camping out - other than to piss people off and make it more difficult for the general public to go about their daily business.
It's counter-productive at this point, they need to move on and take action. Marching and camping out is not going to make a difference. Lobbying and getting the right people into office who can make decisions that will make a difference - that's how you change the world.
Hard earned money? People who have no idea what to believe in, with the exception of insight from what their parents have spoon fed to them which keep them sheltered in a safe, conservative school of thought. I don't think she's actually standing up for anything except for material wealth. She is merely capitalizing on a cause that speaks exactly the opposite of what she does. I would have no doubt that some of her fans would understand the scope of this cause, but god. I thought she was done singing anti-establishment songs after "Smells Like Teen Spirit." How about actually protesting out there and really getting involved, rather than truly displaying your platitude? Also, I think there's some confusion with what Occupy Wall St is all about, and if your sources are either Glenn Beck and Fox News, I feel can only pity that individual's use of calling the protestors or this cause "ignorant". As for Miley, I think a nose ring, tramp stamp, copious amounts of "salvia", and feigned association with causes in order to "buy awareness" from people, will be the closest thing she'll get to becoming a grown up.
