Johnny Depp would like you to know he really, really doesn't enjoy photo shoots. In fact, the closest thing he can compare it to is rape. Well, sure, who hasn't—totally, when a camera is pointed at you it's just like—uh, okay, wait ... he's saying that deliberately posing for a photograph is like suffering a violent sexual assault?
Apparently so. In the November issue of Vanity Fair, Depp said photo shoots make him feel dumb, and added, “Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped ... It feels like a kind of weird—just weird."
If you're thinking that this comment angered RAINN, the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, you'd be darn tootin'.
RAINN was quite pissed off, in fact, and issued a public statement that reminded Depp that rape is a violent crime which affects an American every two minutes, and should not be compared to posing for a photo. The organization's spokesperson also "welcomed the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help."
(Translation: "Nice choice of words, asshat. Now throw a fundraising benefit for us or you're going to look like a dick forever.)
You know, when celebrities get busted for saying something offensive, I often suspect their off the cuff statements reveal their true unpleasant personalities. In this case, however, I truly believe Depp was just floundering around looking for a way to describe the intrusive feeling of having his image packaged and sold to the public. He is, after all, the famously private man who once said, "I'm shy, paranoid, whatever word you want to use. I hate fame. I've done everything I can to avoid it"—I can see how being styled for a photo session is wildly uncomfortable for him.
Still, a better analogy might have been to say it makes him feel like a whore.
Celebrity apologies usually sound pretty insincere, but I think Depp's sounds heartfelt. I get the sense these words are coming from him, not a PR agent, and I believe he really is wishing he could take those words back:
I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling. I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.
Will RAINN accept his apology? Sooooooort of. They responded,
We hope to work with him to provide hope to victims of rape and make sure they get the help they deserve.
In other words, get ready for that fundraiser, Johnny.
Do you think Johnny Depp was out of line with the rape comment? Do you think his apology is good enough?

i don't think he meant it offensively in the first place, and i think his apology was absolutely heartfelt. what i don't appreciate is that every other organization in this country thinks that just because someone with money makes a misstep, they should somehow have to financially redeem themselves. pro sports guy calls someone a homophobic slur? money to GLAAD. movie star uses racial slur? money to NAACP. don't get me wrong, these organizations absolutely deserve support and many of them can't survive on donations alone. but sometimes i feel like some folks are just waiting for the celebrities to screw up so they can bilk some "charity" out of the offending parties.
I absolutely agree with dirtiekittie, i don't believe he meant it offensively, Yes, he shouldnt have compared rape to having his picture taken, he should have came up with a better comparison, he was just saying he feels violated. As a rape victim myself i did not find his statement offensive at all. His apology was sincere and i am sure after all this he will choose his words better next time. Everyone has put their foot in thier mouth at one time or another, you live and learn....
Well my husband fully understands that once Johnny Depp meets me and inevitably falls madly in love with me, he's out of the picture...
Oh, sorry, off topic. Also kidding. Mostly.
I think he just made a poor word choice, and I believe he regrets shoving his foot in his mouth up to the knee. Think before you speak next time, that's all.
I do find the quote about him "avoiding fame" interesting. Really? Are you avoiding it by continuing to be an incredibly successful A-list actor? Because that seems counterproductive. You would think it would be easier to avoid fame if you didn't do movies. Just a thought.
Seriously, though, he needs to keep doing movies. And come meet me. In whichever order. No biggie...
Eh, he gets one point for this apology, but where's his apology for supporting Roman Polanski?
I'm glad he apologized because it is a pretty extreme comparison. I've seen photoshoots of attractive men and women before though, and I can kinda see where to a private sort of person it might feel like a mild form of molestation. I mean, there is something there about displaying for the purpose of titilating and arousing other people (either present at the time, or viewing it later) about these photoshoots that I can see where it might make you uncomfortable if you are not, in fact, the sort to pose for an erotic magazine. But, Yeah, the analogy was bad, and the apology was good.
I think his use of the word wasn't at all out of context.
