Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and one of the two holiest days in the Jewish calendar (the other is the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur).
For many secular Jews, it's not a day we totally understand, and besides, getting tickets to high holiday services isn't so easy and costs way too much. In other words, any cheat sheet that helps us feel a part of the fun is much appreciated.
Lucky for us, there is a new trend of Jewish-produced music videos for all holidays. And while none quite lives up to the amazing Maccabeats' Hanukkah song from last December, some do come kind of close. Plus they are just hilarious.
So here are a few of my favorite amusing Rosh Hashanah videos. And hey, you may even learn something!
The Rosh Hashanah rock anthem is pretty bad ass and has the added bonus of taking place all around the old city in Jerusalem in the same spots I walked just a few months ago on a family trip. This makes me happy. Plus, that hand-walking dude is just cool. I would totally be more religious if it meant I got to hang with him.
So this one is a little cheesier, set to Shakira's "Waka Waka," but the heart is in the right place. I love the part where Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker become besties because of the holiday. Priceless. Plus, anything that makes those ridiculously long and boring high holiday services less so wins my approval. Two thumbs up!
Finally we have this one:
I am not sure I learned anything from this, but it made me laugh. A love song to the new year. Cute, no?
My main takeaway from all these videos is this: I need to dip some apples in honey, stat (the traditional Rosh Hashanah treat). Whether you are Jewish or not, these videos are cute and funny, and hey, you may even learn something about the holiday. It starts at sundown Wednesday, September 28 this year.
Shana tova! (Happy new year!)
Did these videos make you laugh?
