'Sister Wives' Season 3 Premiere Recap: And Baby Makes 22!

sister wivesThe big surprise of the Sister Wives Season 3 premiere wasn't really a big surprise at all: We all knew Robyn, otherwise known as Wife #4, was going to try to have a baby with new husband Kody asap. Plus, the Browns announced Robyn's pregnancy in April 2011; the series lags behind real life by several months. But this was still the first time we actually got to see Kody and Robyn break the news to the rest of the family, and reactions were ... mixed. (In case you're keeping track, 1 husband + 4 wives + 16 kids + 1 more baby = 22 Browns!)

Actually, correction: This was the first time we got to see Kody break the news to the rest of the family. Not Kody and Robyn. Because make no mistake: Kody is the center of the Brown universe, and he's not going to let anybody forget it.

Anyway, some family members seemed genuinely thrilled about the new baby. The little kids were psyched, and Christine, the only wife who's always struck me as 100 percent comfortable with the whole polygamy thing, was predictably enthusiastic and supportive.

Of course the announcement was expected to sting a little bit for Meri, who has just one child (she's tried to have more but is physically unable). If it did, however, she didn't let it show (much). No doubt she's sick and tired of being cast as the bitter, barren first wife.

The teens, on the other hand, didn't even try to hide their ... disappointment? Apathy? Disgust? It was hard to tell how Aspen, Hunter, and Maddie really felt, but I'm gonna say those stone-faced glares weren't "happy" faces.

Which brings me back to ringmaster Kody, who was clearly one happy fella. And why not? Bringing yet another Brown into the world fits perfectly with Kody's self-aggrandizing, biblical-patriarch vision. Really, I'm surprised he hasn't changed his name to Moses yet. Or suggested that instead of dividing themselves between four houses, the family all live together in one big ark.

As with the previous two seasons, the ever-shifting dynamic between the wives is compelling enough to keep me watching. But I must admit, my tolerance for Kody's ego-maniacal shtick is on the decline. Will this guy ever get a clue?

What did you think of the Sister Wives Season 3 premiere?
