Elizabeth OlsenI love a trippy psychological thriller full of raw talent even more than I like mint chip ice cream on a hot September day, and that's saying a lot. And in this regard, the upcoming film Martha Marcy May Marlene looks right up my alley. I'm ready to gobble it down.
The film stars Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister to the Olsen twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, and she looks to be pretty mesmerizing is this role. Olsen plays Martha, and the film follows Martha's schizophrenic narrative between past and present -- past being the time she recently spent living on a farm in an abusive cult and present immediately following her escape from the brutal cult, living with her sister and brother-in-law, who know nothing of her time with the cult, and trying to reconnect in normalcy and come to terms with the terrifying things that happened to her on the farm.
Still with me or have I scared you off already? Watch the trailer after the jump.
WATCH the Martha Marcy May Marlene trailer:
John Hawkes, who played Teardrop, a creepy meth addict in last year's Winter's Bone, stars as the scary Charles-Manson-like cult leader, and Sarah Paulson (Deadwood, Swimmers, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Grey's Anatomy), who I've loved in many things, plays Martha’s sister.
"Do you ever have that feeling where you can't tell if something's a memory or if it's something you dreamed?" This line from the films seems to sum up the place where this movie is going to take us, exploring paranoia, turmoil, depression, terror, delusional thoughts, denial, panic and more. In other words, this movie is not going to be sweet like any ice cream on a hot September day; however, I'm hoping it'll leave me and my love of psychological exploration greatly satisfied.
Martha Marcy May Marlene is due in theaters this fall.
