Chaz Bono to Weed Out Stupid Viewers on 'DWTS'

by Sasha Brown-Worsham on September 1, 2011 at 7:57 PM

Chaz Bono is about to rock Dancing With the Stars, and when he does, they are going to have a viewership they never had before. Let's face it: reality TV is traditionally very low-brow entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I watch it, but it wasn't always the intellectuals and smartest people in the country who hunkered down on Monday night to watch DWTS with us.

Chaz may change all that. As many on the right wing threaten to boycott the show (G-d forbid! Dear Lord, no!), the people with brains may start to realize, "Gee, maybe there is something to this reality TV after all." In other words, for every close-minded fool who DWTS loses, they will gain one intelligent, open-minded person worth two of any bigot any day.

DWTS is going to win big. And so will we. The more people who watch, the more diverse and exciting casts they will choose.

The controversy started with Dan Gainor, the VP of Business & Culture at the Media Research Center, a conservative group whose main aim is to ruin good shows (or so it might seem). According to RadarOnline:

Whether it’s Glee or Dancing With the Stars, this is part of Hollywood’s insistence on tearing down traditional families. Parents now more than ever must realize they cannot let their kids watch television without supervision or risk advocating lifestyles that most families do not approve of.

So let's get this straight: Uptight bigots who won't watch the shows that are on past their child's bedtime anyway are going to boycott now because Chaz Bono -- a transgendered man -- is going to appear on the show? Well good riddance to bad rubbish. Cher has already Tweeted to her son's defense:

This is Still America right? It took guts 2 do it.

Damn straight it did. And we're about to see something amazing take place. The show is going to attract people who want the spectacle, sure. But it will also attract open-minded, intelligent people who might otherwise scoff at a show that once featured "talent" like Jake Pavelka and Bristol Palin.

I have always been a fan of the show from day one, and I am always glad when they bring on a cast who is diverse and unique. If they're worried about ratings because of this ill-conceived "boycott," they will soon see ratings they could never before have imagined.

Yay DWTS! I can't wait to watch this season and I hope everyone will join me.

Do you think Chaz will be good for ratings?

Not going to boycott it because of him...going to boycott it because I don't like reality TV, period. It's all kind of trashy, imo. Life is short, I just don't want to spend it watching this stuff.

    Doesn't make me a bigot.

I love watching dancing with the stars but the chaz ordeal just makes you think  of the woman with the beard it is not natureal to have two women dancing with each other.  Now what if Carson wanted to dress up like a woman and dance with a man pro?

Chaz is not a woman, though. So you wont see two women dancing with each other. It would be a different story if Carson wanted to dress like a woman and dance with a man because Carson is a man.

I never liked the show anyway....I will probably wath the 1st episode, just to see all of the contestants at least once, but frankly I could care less about chaz and  him being transgendered.  he's a person, that is all.  I typically don't  look at people's gender, looks, race or orientation and base anything on them.  We're all people.  My not liking the show has nothing to do with any of those things.  BTW, Sacha, you sound like a horrible Bigot yourself, toward anyone with differing views.  Frankly, that's pretty sad.  If you could just say something like "it's a shame people close their minds and hearts to people who are different than themselves....they don't know what they might be missing" instead of calling people close-minded fools, insinuating that anyone with a differing opinion isworthless and the opposite of intellegent people who choose to watch the show based simply BECAUSE THERES A TRANSGENDERED PERSON on it!  You are nothing but a hater and add to the divisivness in this country.

I don't think it will effect ratings, he'll be on, people will get bored with the show, unless they already love it. Those people will stick around, not the curious ones

I feel sorry for him. It's not him I have the problem with it's the "stars" the show is seeming to get now. He's not the star, his parents were. It doesn't seem to be about "stars" now. It's now more of "who can we get." It's got nothing to do with gender or being a bigot. Why are people so quick to judge?

In the 70's Happy Days was a top rated show until Fonzy jumped a Shark Tank. It killed the show. ABC is out of touch with Main Street America again and on a "Progressive Crusade" to open the minds of those who see the world with traditional values. Sorry Sash Brown-Worsham, Chaz will "Weed out Stupid Viewers"? Really?! Chasity has a face that only a mother could love and won't be attracting huge numbers of viewers. ABC is using this wierd person as a SHOCK factor for ratings that DWTS dosen't need. Wanting to see a man and a woman dancing together in a normal competition dosen't make them stupid. DWTS Advertisers will loose money this season. But you won't be writing about that Mrs. Worsham will you?

So... we're stupid and intolerant and judgemental if we don't think Chaz deserves to be on there - not because he's transgendered, but because he's not a star. But you are smart, inclusive and tolerant in trashing Bristol Palin......... because she's not a star.

    Gotcha.
