Kate Winslet just can't seem to lose these days -- hit movies, perfect body, amazing children. And yet, she still seems so down to Earth and loving. Now she can add life-saving hero to her resume.
Last week, many were hailing Winslet as a hero for her stance against plastic surgery. That seems a little shallow now given that Winslet actually saved the life of a 90-year-old woman (the mother of Richard Branson) this weekend. Plastic surgery versus saving old women from burning buildings? I am thinking the latter is what she would like to be remembered for.
Winslet was staying at Sir Richard Branson’s multi-million dollar Caribbean estate this past weekend with her family and her boyfriend when a fire broke out. The home was destroyed, but Winslet saved the life of the billionaire's 90-year-old mother. See fire below:
Branson thanked Winslet:
Many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year mum out of the main house to safety wondering when a Director was going to shout CUT! The main house is destroyed and the fire is not yet completely out. My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs and my note books which is very sad. But all family and friends are well - which in the end is all that really matters.
It is the sort of thing that puts it all in perspective isn't it? One minute they were all enjoying an incredibly luxurious weekend getaway and the next they were thrown into action. And it is in those moments people show their true nature.
I have always admired Winslet for her intelligence, wit and for choosing roles that have substance. I have never seen her in a single movie that did not make me think (especially Little Children!) In all of her interviews she is humble and funny and open, but this is something else.
Winslet is gorgeous and talented and her stance on plastic surgery is admirable, but it is what people do in the moments when they are not on a global stage that truly matter and Winslet has again proven that she is what she purports to be.
And in Hollywood, that is something special, indeed. She really is a hero.
