Amy WinehouseThis morning's news of Amy Winehouse's death definitely struck a chord with me, as a recovering alcoholic myself. It also struck a very emotional chord in Hollywood, where too often they see drug and alcohol addiction and its most horrific outcomes.

Unless you're an addict or recovering addict or love or have loved an addict, it may be hard to sympathize with Winehouse, who seemed hell bent on self destruction. However, what many don't understand is that addicts like Winehouse who use their addiction to cope are often just trying to figure out how to live. It's never pretty, but it's true. They don't know any other way and often feel like jumping out of their own skin. I know I did a lot of the time. Unless they are able to truly tap into the coping tools available through rehab and get help with emotional issues, dependency becomes incurable -- and one of the most heartbreaking life struggles there is.

I admit I kinda wanted to make some jokes about it when i found out, but I can't. It really is too sad because she truly had problems and she let them destroy her. I hate to see anyone lose their life too young, regardless of how and why

Thanks for sharing that Sheri! I was honestly just about to ask above posters how they knew absolutely none of the above celebs said anything about Norway. Personally I think any life lost is a terrible tragedy and to try to take away from Amy Winehouse's death by stating that many more children died in Norway is just as bad as someone who wouldn't address what happened in Norway because a much bigger celebrity died. And for anyone to suggest that she knew what she was doing is just sad. It shows a lack of understanding of what addiction is all about. Personally I think the government should decriminalize drugs so that our focus won't be on punishing people, but instead on getting them help.

I agree about Norway being a tragedy however...... Many of us feel connected to Amy thru her music and struggles with addiction! I talked about her on my page because I can identify with the loss of Amy (have family who struggle currently). Don't judge people so harshly there but for the grace of the lord you will know their motives first hand! RIP Amy Winehouse!

Aside from the sadness everyone feels about the loss of Amy Winehouse, even sadder still, no one, not even those who left their comments and feelings about her loss, will learn anything from this. If we didn't learn from John Belushi, Freddy Mercury, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and the thousands of other great talents who invited the death demons into their lives, why would we think that losing Amy will change anything. For some redundant reason, everyone wants to learn firsthand, how it feels to die for excess. In the words of Peter, Paul and Mary, "When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?"
