Roseanne with boyfriend Johnny ArgentMy DVR is all set for tomorrow night's premiere of the new Roseanne Barr reality show on Lifetime, Roseanne's Nuts, which chronicles her life today living on a working macadamia nut farm in Hawaii.
I'm a huge Roseanne fan, so, of course, I already know she is nuts (if you're still not sure, follow her on Twitter for a few hours). At the same time, I also believe in the pure genius of her unabashed courage, ability to look uncomfortable experiences and situations square in the eye, and tell it like it is. And then laugh.
Enter in the fresh hope that reality might actually be depicted on reality TV ...
The reviews of Roseanne's Nuts are rolling in, and not everyone is a fan so far, but I think everyone is able to appreciate that Roseanne is good for laughs and keeping it real. Let's check out what reviewers are saying.
David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle
She's foulmouthed, abrasive, and suffers absolutely nothing gladly. Yet, as always, her own foibles crack her up as much as they do her boyfriend or visiting eldest son. The fact that she's completely unafraid to hold herself up to ridicule endears her to her audience.
Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times
Barr has always celebrated and/or wallowed in the messiness of ordinary life, combining the crass, the outrageous, and the revelatory in a way that no one has quite been able to duplicate ... She is also much more willing to laugh at her actual self -- it's difficult to imagine another star of her age and measurements who would allow herself to be filmed, from behind, while running ... But then Barr has always been more than happy to do and say what others would not, with wildly different degrees of success. She also knows that calling herself on her own stuff gives her even greater license to call others on theirs. Which is, of course, even more fun. In Roseanne's Nuts, she manages to do both.
Hank Stuever, The Washington Post
Roseanne Barr is a curious character, still, at 58. If you thought she didn't give a flip what anyone thought of her back when Roseanne was a hit show two decades ago, you should hear her screech now. Beyond her unhinged propensity for tantrum exists the remote possibility that she might have something important to tell us ...
