Do you guys remember that VH1 reality show, Hogan Knows Best? I'll be the first to admit that I not only watched that show, but looked forward to it on Sunday nights. Hulk Hogan and Linda Hogan seemed so happy with their matching tans and fake blond hair -- they'd tease each other and discuss parenting problems and simply seemed like a happier-than-average couple with ridiculous style and boat loads of money.
I liked the show because, like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, it's fun to watch the super-rich experience the normal day to day drama of family minutia. But I was totally fooled. Linda claims in her new autobiography Wresting the Hulk: My Life Against the Ropes that she was severely abused by Hulk and was afraid for her life.
She told Matt Lauer on the Today Show that Hulk's prescription drug use would essentially turn him into a monster that she didn't recognize. Linda admits she was afraid he would kill her in one of his epic rages. Scary stuff. Linda admits that didn't speak up for years because she was afraid that her confession would ruin his career and their family.
Of course I don't think that reality shows paint the realest picture of what's going on, but Linda and Hulk were so in love on that show -- it was their relationship that kept me watching. It's sad to discover that they were all faking it for the cameras and that behind closed doors everything was a complete mess.
When the show was cancelled in 2007, it seems no one in the Hogan family could keep up the facade any longer. Linda and Hulk divorced after allegations that Hulk slept with his daughter's friend, son Nick was imprisoned for reckless driving that left his friend on permanent life-support, and Linda, 48, started dating a 19-year-old. Daughter Brooke Hogan is the only one who seemed to come out of the cancellation unfazed and got a spin-off, Brooke Knows Best.
Hulk came across as a protective father and Linda as the complete care-taker, but her allegations in the book seem too harsh to be fabricated. While she never, ever looked afraid on Hogan Knows Best, I will give her acting skills the benefit of the doubt. If she had covered up her abuse for so long, I'm sure she was skilled at pretending everything was OK. She fooled me, that's for sure.
What do you think of Linda's accusations?
