John Galliano Gives Lamest Excuse for Being Racist

Onetime top Christian Dior designer John Galliano is on trial today in Paris on charges of public insult after using anti-Semitic insults in a Paris bar back in February. After that incident, Galliano promptly lost his job after a video surfaced of him praising Adolf Hitler. Now, under hate speech sentencing rules, he's facing a $32,500 fine and six months in prison.

Naturally, Galliano has an excuse for his behavior: the alcohol and drugs he took to "help him deal with a heavy workload at the two labels for which he designed." He's also claiming that the 2007 death of his partner at Dior, Steven Robinson, increased his workload and his stress levels.

You know, because booze and stress can totally make you say things like "Dirty Jewish face, you should be dead" and "Fucking Asian bastard, I will kill you."

Galliano told the Paris court that he doesn’t remember the anti-Semitic and racist slurs he used when he verbally attacked bar patrons in the February incident. At the time, he says, he was addicted to alcohol, Valium, and Ambien, and initially denied making the slurs when questioned by police because he was "in denial."

Also, he showed up to court with a jacket, but no shirt. Ugh.

His attorney claims that Galliano had no way of knowing what he was saying at the time, and thus should not be held legally accountable for his actions. Which is RIDICULOUS. What if he had pulled out a gun and shot the woman whom he was busy describing as "a dirty whore" with a "dirty Jewish face"? Should he still get a free pass?

Besides, I don't believe for a second that anyone would use that kind of language unless they meant it. God knows I have done some incredibly stupid things while drunk, but I would never use racial slurs no matter how shitfaced I was—because, you know, I'm not a freaking racist.

Check out this video of Galliano slurring his way through a bizarre bigoted rant:

Really, he's only saying those things because he's drunk? Sure, and Mel Gibson only hates Jews when he's had a few, too.

I don't think a legal fine can turn John Galliano into a better person, but I hope he doesn't weasel his way out of these consequences by playing the addict card. I don't care what kinds of problems he's facing, nothing gives him the excuse of being a racist asshole.
