Twilight actress Bryce Dallas Howard announced Thursday that she is pregnant with her second child. Her first son, Theo, was born four years ago and she has recently spoken out about her battle with postpartum depression.
During her first pregnancy, she gained 80 pounds and the weight helped send her spiraling, which may be part of the reason she waited so long to go for number two. Or maybe it was her age. At 30, she is still on the young end of Hollywood mothers. She married her husband Seth Gabel in 2006.
Last July, Howard, who played vampire Victoria in the Twilight movie Eclipse wrote an essay for Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP blog that spoke of her battle with postpartum depression. She explained:
Nothing. I felt nothing.
Any time we bring a child into the world, it is an act of bravery -- Will he be healthy? Strong? Smart? Well-behaved? -- but this is particularly true when you have suffered from PPD.
Howard said she called her newborn son "it" and had many emotional breakdowns. Howard did not tell anyone what she was feeling and by night would have "uncontrollable sobs."
Well, good for her for speaking out! Unlike so many others in Hollywood who would have you believe their lives are pure perfection (Jennifer Lopez and your non-IVF twins, I am looking at you). The mom life is not easy even if you are beautiful, famous, talented, wealthy and Ron Howard's daughter.
It was about more than the weight gain, of course, but Hollywood pressure will do a number on your self-esteem and 80 pounds is a lot to gain in your first pregnancy. At any rate, let's hope her second pregnancy is a bit smoother and that she and her husband have another healthy, thriving baby!
Congratulations to the couple!
Did you suffer from PPD?
