'Pirates of the Caribbean 5' Will Sink Without Johnny Depp

pirates of the caribbean 5Sold on seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides this weekend? Disney has a lot riding on you! They're hoping you'll be just as excited for Pirates of the Caribbean 5. In fact, they're currently trying to map out how they'll pull off a fifth installment of the popular pirate franchise, but the reality remains ... Johnny Depp aka Captain Jack Sparrow isn't onboard yet.

I don't blame him. Given that On Stranger Tides is the FOURTH Pirates film, I'm not sure there's anywhere to go from here. Because if horror flicks are any kind of litmus test (and they're usually the only ones that make part 3s and part 4s), going well beyond a plain old sequel usually puts plot on rocky waters.

Maybe you're such a big Pirates fan, you don't care! Plot shmot! It's all about the action anyway! But would you still head to the theater a fifth time if you couldn't count on Captain Jack?

Depp recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter that he's not sold on doing a fifth, yet-to-be-titled Pirates film:

Boils down to the story, script and filmmaker. It's not something where I would say, 'Let's shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012. We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me.

Awwww!!! That's so cute! He's really invested in these films, huh? I love that! I mean, I guess that makes plenty of sense, given that he's endeared himself to audiences as Sparrow since 2003. And that said, how on EARTH could Disney think to make Pirates #5 without him?

It hasn't stopped them from dipping more than a toe in the water. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said to the L.A. Times:

We’re working out a script. Hopefully, if this one does well, [Depp] will want to come back and play the character again. But it’s gonna depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.

Kind of a harsh word choice there, Brucks. But at least he admits that if Johnny decides to take a pass on playing the swashbuckling hero for a fifth time, Bruckheimer says he'll pull the curtain on the $2.68-billion series.

Johnny is enormously popular. He’s the center of the franchise. He is the franchise.

Lesson here: If you love Pirates of the Caribbean and Captain Jack played by Johnny Depp, get thyself to a theater this weekend! It could be your last chance to see the two as one! Then, pray that the Depp-ster plans to reprise his role for movie number five, or if not, Disney has the common sense to let the franchise go down with some pride.

Would you see a fifth Pirates movie if it didn't star Johnny Depp?
