brad pittTerrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, Days of Heaven) debuted his new film, The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn earlier this morning at Cannes, and the reaction was ... odd.

Predominantly, the closing of the film was met with applause. But, there were the scattered boos that could be heard throughout, as well.

I'm sorry, was that booing? At Cannes? At Terrence Malick? At Brad Pitt? Oh, no, my friends, if there are three places and people you don't boo at, those are it.

Let's start off with why you don't boo at Cannes. Well, first of all, it's Cannes. You're in the French Riviera, the Cote d'Azur, the epitome of glamour, luxury, and opulence. You're going to go and boo while you're there? What is there to boo about, ya snots? Do you know how many people would give their left (insert body part of choice) to go to the French city period, nevertheless the film festival? To actually boo at a piece of art people have worked so hard at like you're at a WWE match is just ... tre gauche. Not liking it is one thing, but emitting farm animal sounds that translate to "me no likey" is quite another. My nose is up in the air at you.

As far as why you don't boo at Terrence Malick (even though he wasn't there), well, that's easy. The man is sort of a genius, no? And even if you don't think him a genius, you have to respect him. He's Rhodes scholar, a journalist, and taught philosophy at a little school called MIT. And he's not just famous for his intellect and artistry, but for his reclusiveness -- which is a lot more than we can say about other directors, cough, Judd Apatow, cough. You may not like his latest film, but booing him is such an insult.

Lastly, we're talking Brad Pitt, people. Come on, get it together. You may not like the mother of his children, but he's a damn good actor. And, fine, I'll say it, he's not totally gross looking.
