It has been more than 10 years since Pixar introduced us to Mike, Sulley, and the other lovable characters in Monsters, Inc. It came out years before I had children, yet still I saw it and fell in love with it. I've been waiting not-so-patiently in the ensuing decade for a sequel, and finally some details about it have been released.
They've actually been kind of trickling in over the past couple of months. So far we've seen the logo (or at least working logo) and know the title: Monsters University. As far as the plot, it seems to be more of a prequel than a sequel as it focuses on Mike and Sulley back in their college days. Here's the summary from The Disney Blog:
In the original they were an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. When these two mismatched monsters met at school they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.
Monsters loose in college? So much good fodder there!
Billy Crystal and John Goodman are both back in their roles, and Jennifer Tilly will be back as Celia. I'm craving popcorn just thinking about it. Sequels are tricky, but I choose to believe this one will work. It has to!
It's not going to open until June 21, 2013, after being pushed back from November 2012 (boo!), so we have awhile to wait, but at least we know they're working on it. The good news is if you haven't yet introduced your children to the original, you have plenty of time to do so and get them excited about this sequel/prequel ... so they'll go and see it with you.
Next milestone to anticipate -- trailers. Here's to hoping they somehow work in Boo!
Are you excited to see the sequel to Monsters Inc.?
