You know the saying "third time's a charm," right? Well apparently, Matthew Perry agrees. So much so that he's headed back for this third stint at rehab. The former Friends star, who has battled addictions to alcohol and prescription pills in the past, announced this morning that he's headed back to a treatment facility to focus on his successful healing:
I'm making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web.
Hell, a statement like that takes the fun out of making fun of him, don't you think?
While the star of ABC's Mr. Sunshine may have meant it as a joke, could he be shedding light on a bigger issue? We hear about celebrities (cough, Lindsay Lohan, cough) who go for months and months battling addictions and bad habits. Perry could be touching on a huge problem for A-listers. If the public was less critical of rehabilitation programs, then would our Hollywood elite be, dare I say it, a little less tainted?
Obviously, anyone who is suffering from addictive behavior is in a bit of a rut. I can only imagine how hard it is. You have to admit to yourself that you have a problem that is in need of treatment. And as a celebrity, you know that your admission means it won't be long before millions and millions of people know about your shame-filled habits. That could make anyone -- even in Hollywood -- cower away from getting the treatment they need.
Alas, Perry needs to go back and is going back, even if it is a third time. And although the gossip columnists may have a thing or two to say about it, he's clearly in the right frame of mind, making a joke of the whole scenario. Let's just hope he doesn't take this treatment as a joke, too. Because going back for a fourth time? Forgettaboutit.
What do you think about Perry heading back to rehab?
