Oh man, Jerry Seinfeld! There sure are some people in the U.K. who hate you today. In case you haven't already heard and therefore aren't currently cringing on behalf of the comedian, I'll update you. Seinfeld was in England promoting his stand-up show at the O2 on June 3 when he made some rather controversial comments on the British talk show, Daybreak ...
The host asked him if he was looking forward to the royal wedding in two weeks, and he replied:
Yes, I’m very excited. Well it’s a circus act, it’s an absurd act. You know, it’s a dress-up. It’s a classic English thing of let's play dress-up. Let’s pretend that these are special people. OK, we’ll all pretend that -- that’s what theater is. That’s why the British have the greatest theater in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend.
Oooufff! As if likening an entire country to 5-year-olds wasn't bad enough, Seinfeld continued:
And that's what the Royal family is -- it's a huge game of pretend. These aren't special people -- it's fake outfits, fake phoney hats and gowns. It’s fantastic. We don’t have anything like that.
Is it just me or does it sound like he started a shtick that could have been quick-witted and funny ... but then somehow didn't realize that he should have stopped ... and he kept going on, and on, and on, digging himself deeper and deeper, until he basically insulted an entire country and their royal family?
To his credit, Seinfeld's line at the end of his mini-rant did kind of serve as an "out," a "just kidding!" But he could have integrated that thought a little more. It might have been funnier to draw parallels between the royal wedding and, say, I don't know, America's obsession with Brad and Angelina?? Or even the vegan wedding of Chelsea Clinton? I don't know. All I'm sayin' is ... if Jerry thinks the royal wedding is nutty, we have plenty of our own ridiculousness going on here on our side of our pond.
I personally love that England has monarchs and a big brouhaha with this royal wedding. The 21st century is awesome, thanks to FaceTime and JetBlue and all, but some old-fashioned, romantic tradition is a welcome reprieve from a lot of the other frustrating, magic-less aspects of modern life. So, geeze, Jerry -- could ya stop being such a royal buzzkill??
Do you think Seinfeld has a point about the royal wedding or did he go too far?
