When I first heard the new song "E.T." by Katy Perry, I liked it. Sure I made a few jokes about phoning home, but I liked it. A lot. It got an 8.9 outta 10 on the "does this make cleaning the house fun" meter. My man Kanye West lends his signature voice to the tune, it pumps, it thumps, you find your head unconsciously nodding along with the beat. I was so thrilled one of my fave signers was doing so well with the new album. And then I saw the video.
Oh, Katy, Katy, Katy. I applaud your "stretching" as an artist (and as an alien being). I think you are uber-talented (and can't wait to see you, well, hear you in The Smurfs this summer). I don't think you are copying Lady Gaga.
But your video looks just, well, kinda corny. Kinda bad sci-fi movie from the 70s corny.
Of course, Katy, even as an alien, looks gorgeous, but the whole falling through space starting about the 1:09 minute mark lasts a looooong time. Then she lands on what I think is Earth. Then she finds some sunglasses and has Bambi legs or hooves or ... it's all just odd. And schtick-y. And a little boring.
Yes, it is similar to the recent videos from fellow pop divas Lady Gaga and Britney -- all of the ladies seem to have outer space on the brain. I didn't care for their videos either, but at least they had some cool dance numbers.
Katy just falls through space and kisses some guy-thing-alien. I can't get past the falling through space ... I knew it reminded me of something ... and then I remembered! Fantastically bad sci-fi flick The Black Hole circa 1979. Check out the evil dude falling through space at the 2:00 mark!
Sigh. I will still play the song when I'm dusting the bookshelves .. and somehow try to forget the video.
What do you think of Katy Perry's "E.T." video?
