Natalie Portman & Sarah Lane Need To Have a Dance Off

Natalie PortmanNatalie Portman has never hid the fact that she used a dance double for some of the more complicated dance scenes in Black Swan. Her dance double, Sarah Lane, however, has recently come forward saying Portman did hide just how much she used her. Natalie's camp says it's her dancing in 85 percent of the scenes; Lane says it's Portman in just 5 percent of the dance scenes. Big difference!

Lane, a student from the American Ballet Theatre, makes a good case IF she speaks the truth. I'd want it acknowledged too if I'd done most of the dancing credited to an Oscar-winning actress. She told EW:

They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar. It is demeaning to the profession and not just to me. I’ve been doing this for 22 years…. Can you become a concert pianist in a year and a half, even if you’re a movie star?

Good point -- could she really get that good in such a short amount of time?

Portman hasn't responded personally yet, but film execs say she absolutely did do the dancing. Fox Searchlight issued a statement saying:

We were fortunate to have Sarah there to cover the more complicated dance sequences and we have nothing but praise for the hard work she did. However, Natalie herself did most of the dancing featured in the final film.

It's a big she-said, she-said mess that really can only be solved one way: A good old-fashioned dance off! It's not like someone cheating on someone where only the two people accused know the real truth (if there aren't cameras involved.) There is a way to figure this shiz out.

If Portman really did do the moves, then let's see them. Defend your Oscar, Natalie! Sure there's that little matter of her being pretty pregnant at the moment, so maybe we'll have to wait until after the birth. But someone needs to start setting this up so we can solve it once and for all.

Winner gets the Oscar?

Do you think Natalie Portman really did less of the dancing in Black Swan than we were led to believe, or do you think Sarah Lane is just trying to make a name for herself?

I think it's lame. If this Sarah chick had a real issue she should have brought it up before the movie was nominated for all these awards. They were saying Natalie had done most of the dancing long before awards season had started so why bring it up now? It's interesting that a lot of these people always wait until after, when it will get the most attention. I'm sorry but this chick doesn't have a leg to stand on in my opinion because if it had mattered so much to her she would have been shouting from the roof tops when the movie first came out.

I agree with sassykat122. Also, who cares? She didn't win the Oscar for her dancing ability but her acting ability.

Natalie's boyfriend/babydaddy/professional dancer himself, did an interview not that long ago and he apparently was saying that Natalie did most of the dancing and the double only did about 5%. Sarah said she felt hurt and somewhat betrayed that a former dancer would say that she did hardly any of the work as he himself should know, dancer to dancer, what she added to the film. I don't think she went looking for the praise and recognition or that wanted to call Natalie out but when a former dancer who she actually used to work with pretty much said she barely contributed to the film than I can't blame Sarah for stepping up to set the story straight. I think she was fine with getting hardly any credit for her work until this guy started running his mouth and tried to take all her hard work away. Just my 2 cents.

I can't believe anyone would think for a second someone could become a ballerina in a little over a year or whatever the timeframe was. I doubt Portman did all the dancing the studio claims. And so what if her boyfriend vouches for her? Not exactly an unbiased source. Natalie Portman is a mediocre actress at best so all the buzz about how amazing she is is a little baffling anyway, but to say she is a ballerina now is pushing it a bit too far. Especially considering that is pretty much dumping all over the real dancer who did all the work.

She still wasnt saying anything until after all the hoopla started. They were saying this same stuff when the movie came out, when they were touring for all of that. If all she had wanted was just due and not to gain an extra 15 minutes then she would have been tooting her own horn months and months ago.

No, my point is is that she didn't get upset about all of this until Benjamin M., Natalie's boyfriend and who is a dancer himself and who also worked on the film with both of them stated in a recent interview that Sarah only did about 5% of the work. I don't think she was upset when the "hollywood people" said Natalie did most of the dancing because she figured that is how its done in hollywood but when Benjamin M. started saying it then that is when she felt betrayed by a fellow dancer. Like he, of all people, should know better as a fellow dancer himself.

Either way her claims are lame because as LittleManMama says she didn't win an Oscar for her dancing skills, she won for her acting skills and despite what the chicken ANON post who can't leave an actual name Portman has gotten rave reviews as an actress since she was a child and while some movies haven't been up to par her resume speaks for itself.

um, she won that oscar bc she's a great actor!! not bc she's a gifted dancer. that wasn't her category. she made the audience feel the character, feel the pain, and she sure danced too. i think lane should have shut her mouth, she wasn't there in editing and she was paid for her part, her part wasn't to be put on a pedastool for dancing in the flick. and i doubt people will work with her again bc of this whole thing.

I'm a dancer though not professional one and have opinion that the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think that most of the footwork is Sarah's and most of the above nees is Nat's. The thing is that point is that most of dancing is in the feet. Just my two cents.

The movie is about Natalie's acting ability - and it sounds like sour grapes from this Sarah Chick. If she wants so much glory and recognition, she should have taken up the lead role. Its a bit off to come after the fact...
