The latest Hollywood breakup buzz is over Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper. After dating for about two years, they have split. While a bit sad to see any relationship end, the only thing surprising here is how long it took to end and that they ever dated in the first place.
Their reps have made no comments, but there were plenty of signs along the way that it wouldn't last. For starters, they never even confirmed they were dating. Though they were together a lot and she even moved in with him, they never actually admitted their feelings for one another. We certainly don't need (or want) Tom Cruise couch jumping to confirm a couple's feelings for one another, but a small acknowledgement in public would be nice.
Instead, the most Cooper ever said about her was that he could learn from her. In September he told People:
I can't say enough about her. I just love her. I [loved] coming to work. I love acting with her. I can learn so much from her.
He did use the "l' word, yes, but not in a romantic way.
Then there's that little matter of difference in their looks. Not that looks are or should be everything, but let's face it -- when one of them is named one of most beautiful people and the other is topping plastic surgery nightmare lists, there's a definite divide there that could crush the strongest of couples. While she used to be cute and perky, the years (and scalpel) haven't been kind to Zellweger, and Cooper just keeps getting hotter. It would be nice if that wasn't an issue, but this is Hollywood we're talking about.
Also, Cooper doesn't have such a good track record when it comes to sticking around. In 2006 he married Jennifer Esposito. That only lasted four months because "it just wasn't right." Of course, Zellweger was also married to Kenny Chesney for just four months, so perhaps that was a mutual problem.
Then there's the imbalance in their careers. While Zellweger was once Oscar hot, she hasn't put out much to be proud of in quite some time. Cooper, on the other hand, rose to fame with The Hangover, and The Hangover 2 is already one of the year's hottest movies before it has even hit theatres. As well, Limitless is leading the box office this week. Zellweger's work as of late ... hmm, well there was that cameo role in Monsters vs. Aliens a few years back.
There are just too many issues out of balance between the two to make it work. Perhaps they'll reunite down the line and prove that love can conquer all, but I doubt it. The good news is that this time they didn't rush to the altar so there's no messy paperwork with which to deal.
Are you surprised to learn that Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper split?
