Hunger Games fans, it seems we have our Katniss Everdeen. Lionsgate has confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence scored the lead role in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' well-loved dystopian YA novel.
According to MTV, Lawrence was chosen out of more than 30 actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin. (Dude, they totally should have made all those girls fight for the role in a cruel yet mesmerizing televised event.)
Jennifer Lawrence is the Academy Award-nominated actress from Winter's Bone, who's also starring as Mystique in X-Men: First Class this summer.
Given the dedicated fan base for Collins' books, there was bound to be strong opinions about Hollywood's choice for Katniss. I conducted an informal poll on Twitter, and nearly every response was what I'd categorize as "unenthused."
Some of the initial resistance may be due to Lawrence's pretty blonde appearance, and the difficulty of picturing her as the embattled teenage heroine. Of course, she transformed her looks for Winter's Bone, and doing so again shouldn't be a challenge.
What may be more difficult, especially if they decide to film the entire Games trilogy, is her age. Katniss Everdeen is 16 at the start of Hunger Games; Lawrence is nearly 21.
(By the way, my long-shot pick for Katniss was Kaya Scodelario, but apparently no one asked ME.)
Suzanne Collins herself has voiced her approval for Lawrence, saying,
Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving, and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.
I may have some reservations, but really, I can't wait either. Come on March 23, 2012! It's only ... a year from now. *sigh*
