Casey Abrams is far and away my favorite contestant on American Idol, definitely for this season and possibly for all time. How could you not love the guy? He just seems like such a fun, quirky dude, and when he opens his mouth to sing—well, it almost makes watching each 200-hour-long Idol episode worthwhile. NO SMALL FEAT.
Unfortunately, a serious health issue continues to jeopardize Abrams' participation in the show. Fans were concerned when Abrams was hospitalized following Hollywood week, with Idol announcing that he would be disqualified if he wasn't well enough to perform during the men's taping. He was released just hours before the show taped and turned in a great performance, but this week he was back under medical care and missing from the result show.
At first, no details were released about his medical condition, with Ryan Seacrest saying only that Abrams was sick. Abrams himself tweeted a message to his fans, saying:
Hey guys, thanks for the well wishes, I got some nice fresh blood in me and feeling better. People at Idol & Cedars are treatin me real good.
It turns out that Abrams, 20, received two blood transfusions Thursday night, reportedly to treat ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the lining of the large intestine, and causes abdominal pain and cramping. The disease can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications, and while there are therapies to treat it, there's no known cure.
Abrams seems like he's focused on taking care of himself, but also keeping his eye on the prize:
My health is always first, but this is my dream, I’m going to keep fighting to stay in.
Sounds like a smart approach to getting his health back on track and hopefully rejoining the Idol competition. I sure hope to see him back on the stage soon.
While we wish Casey a speedy recovery, please enjoy his outstanding Joe Cocker performance from earlier this week. Best of the bunch by a long shot:
