'Real Housewives of Orange County' Premiere Recap: Evil Eyes

Real Housewives of Orange CountyThe claws came out right out of the gate on the premiere of The Real Housewives of Orange County Sunday. The veteran Housewives didn't disappoint and took up right where they left off, and kept on going. When an afternoon shopping party turns into a drunken shouting match with a half-naked bartender and a new lesbian Housewife looking on, you know it's going to be a good season.

Tamra Barney set the stage by inviting all the Housewives to a shopping party at the home of her "super hot" new boyfriend, Eddie. We didn't get to meet Eddie yet, but he has a nice house. Things weren't nice inside, however, once Gretchen Rossi entered the party. She had a bad attitude (and a buzz) going in -- still pissed about how Tamra treated her last season (calling her a gold digger and all) -- but for some reason went anyway ... probably because there was free booze, which she guzzled with gusto.

When they were looking at the clothes, the sales rep brought out a hat with an evil eye on it, designed to ward off evil spirits. Gretchen immediately donned it and looked at Tamra and said, "Maybe I should wear this around you." And it was on.

I was willing to write that comment off as her trying to be funny and failing, but Tamra took it a lot harder. She ran to Vicki so they could get their fix of Gretchen bashing, but then tried to move on and let things lie.

Gretchen had no intention of letting things lie, and unleashed when Tamra later confronted her. (Keep in mind this is all happening in broad daylight, on a Thursday afternoon, which made it all the more intense.)

"Were you calling me an evil bitch, is that what you’re saying?" Tamra asked Gretchen, who was drunkenly ogling the bartender.

"Yeah, I totally kind of was," Gretchen slurred.

Shortly thereafter, Gretchen grabbed her posse and hopped back into the limo that had brought them. Side note: The limo was hired by Alexis, who is having a hard time parenting with just one nanny, so she tries to do "what Jesus would do." Whether Jesus would hire a limo so he could get sloshed in the middle of the day without getting a DUI, I'm not sure.

As far as Gretchen, I'd always kind of liked her before and felt like the other ladies were a bit jealous of her and her young perky body. But tonight Gretchen definitely set herself up as the bad girl  (or really drunk girl?) as she totally unleashed on her friend Alexis too for calling her a "princess." Maybe it's all her handbags that have gone to her head -- you know, those cheap ones she hawking on TV that NO real Real Housewife would ever be caught dead carrying.

It's not that she doesn't have just cause for being angry at Tamra, but her sloppy approach to it all didn't win her any fans. Oh, and was it just me, or did Gretchen have a little something more done to her face since the last time we saw her? She's looking a bit different.

In any case, it's great to see the women of Orange County back. We didn't see much of Fernanda Rocha, the new lesbian Housewife, other than to be teased with a flirtation between her and Tamra; and Peggy Tanous didn't make an appearance. But  it will be interesting to see new blood try to blend in with this group. Judging from the previews and press accounts, what we saw tonight is nothing compared to what's in store. Bring it on.
