Funny man Mike Myers was secretly married to long-time love Kelly Tisdale FIVE months ago. Five months ago! That is like five years in Hollywood time. How and why he kept his marriage a secret isn't clear. But the two were married in New York City in 2010.
Congrats to the happy couple, but I have a bone to pick with them. Why the secrecy? It seems to be all the rage among celebrities to keep the press in the dark and they are so proud of themselves when they can pull it off. Think Nicole Kidman's secret baby. Or Sandra Bullock's secret adoption that came out after her split from Jesse James.
It isn't that I think celebs need to tweet their every bowel movement, but come on. The least they can do is MENTION it. "You know, I had a baby last weekend ..." They can even be all casual-like, but we WANT to know, people!
It's also so self-important to keep it a secret. Would we really be tearing down Mike Myers' walls to get a glimpse of his wedding if we knew? I kind of doubt it. He is funny and great, but hardly a tabloid dynamo.
Look, all jobs have their downsides and this is one of them for celebs. When I was first out of college, I had to make a lot of copies and file things. I hated that. But everyone kept telling me that my job had downsides and upsides. In that case, there were no upsides, but in Hollywood, there are quite a few. Here are some:
- Great clothing
- Fun parties
Yeah, it has to suck to have your whole life posted on the blogs (um, hello there!) and tabloids, but the fact is, smart celebrities -- Tom Hanks, for instance -- manage to stay above the fray and still share their news. The day his grandson was born? Guess what?! We knew.
It isn't that we need to know or even that we have a right to know. But it smacks of smug self-righteousness to keep a secret like that. What is more smug than the celeb who says, "I don't talk about my personal life" while living off the millions of dollars her fans put in her pocket. Fans are curious, so why not throw them a bone?
It seems unlikely that the Mike Myers wedding was going to be hounded by press and paparazzi, but if he was afraid of that, mention it after the fact. We don't need to be invited to the wedding, but for god's sake, why the secrecy? "I got married." That's all we need to know.
Do you think these secret babies and weddings are ridiculous?
