Katie Holmes Sues 'Star Magazine' for 50 Million: Does She Have a Case?

After enduring years of tabloid articles claiming that she's a slave to Scientology, her marriage is in shambles, and even that her pregnancy was faked, Katie Holmes is finally firing back. Specifically, she's leveling her legal weaponry at Star Magazine with a fat-ass lawsuit asking for $50 million in damages.

The reason? The January issue of Star featured a cover with the attention-grabbing headline, "ADDICTION NIGHTMARE -- Katie DRUG SHOCKER! -- The Real Reason She Can’t Leave Tom." Like most tabloid covers, this turned out to be complete bullshit, but in this case, the actual article didn't even pretend to be in line with what the cover insinuated.

The story was instead about Holmes' supposed use of a Scientology "e-meter" ... which "may" spark an endorphin release of some kind. Ooooooh, scandalous.

Naturally, they ran the headline next to an unflattering paparazzo photo of Holmes looking less than red-carpet-ready, so as to better drive home the mental image of Katie hitting the crack pipe between shopping outings with Suri.

Holmes has now filed a $50 million libel lawsuit against American Media, Star's publishers. Her attorney told TMZ,

Star Magazine's malicious claims about Katie are untrue, unethical, and unlawful. Not only do they cruelly defame Katie, they play a cheap trick on the public, making ridiculously false claims on the cover unsupported by anything inside.

It does seem interesting that she's zeroed in on this particular cover. I wonder if there's more of a legal case here than your typical false-rumor story, since they can claim the headline is so misleading from the article itself. Would she still have been able to sue if they'd made actual drug use claims in the article, citing those ever-nebulous "sources"?

An eyebrow-raising twist—her attorney also said, "Someone should bring a class action to get all buyers their money back." Can you IMAGINE? Tabloids would have to issue back payments for every egregious lie they've ever printed! Heads up, publications in the business of profiting from Brangelina breakup rumors.

Do you think Katie Holmes has a case against Star?
