American Idol is taking over my life, and yours. It's two hours long, it's on what feels like eight nights a week, and we, its slaves, must watch every second. The top 24 was finalized last night and we now know who we're going spend the next few months voting for or voting against. While it's nice to finally have the live portion of the show starting next week, I have an issue with the judges.
How do I say this. Hmm. So American Idol is a singing competition first and foremost, but we're also choosing someone who has the "X" factor that Simon taught us about. A girl or a boy whom we like, root for, and who's generally ... easy on the eyes.
This group ... is not that pretty. What's worse? Not that great.
Not only are most of them borderline unattractive, some of them aren't even likable! Clint Coke Bottles and Jordan Dorsey? We already hate them. They were rude and self-righteous during Hollywood week, not something we want in our Idol. I'm thinking they'll get voted off within the first few weeks. If the judges aren't going to give us star-quality looks, I wish they'd give us star-quality affability.
I'm also concerned about the fashions. When did tulle become a basic? Julie Zorrilla, Lauren Alaina, and Thia Megia all wore some poofed out skirts. It's Julie's signature look, so that's understandable, but what was Lauren's excuse? The cowgirl Barbie outfit was hideous, and not in a tongue-in-cheek way. I'm convinced she thought she looked good. Even J. Lo was like, no she didn't. "Did they make that special for you?" Of course they did.
There are some pretty people sprinkled throughout our top 24 and they're almost as hard to pick out as the talent. Is anyone excited about any of these contestants? The producers seem to be pushing Jacob Lusk on us, but we've seen him before, during season three, when his name was George Huff. And George made it to the top five. I predict a similar fate for Lusk.
Speaking of the top five, here it is: Julie Zorrilla, Tim Halperin, Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, and Karen Rodriguez. And did you hear? We can vote online this season! Fifty votes a person an episode. Pretty cool stuff.
What do you think of the top 24?
