Betty Garrett was an actress almost everyone has seen but they might not know her name. Aside from playing Frank Sinatra's love interest in Take Me Out to the Ballgame and On the Town in 1949, she had fantastic roles on Laverne & Shirley and All In the Family.
She was also one of the many to sing "Baby, It's Cold Outside."
The 91-year-old taught her usual musical comedy class on Wednesday in Los Angeles at Theater West, but was having chest pains so checked in to Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center on Friday. Garrett died the next day of what they believe is an aortic aneurysm.
Wow, 91-years-old and still teaching music comedy classes! Betty lived quite a life, and I remember her from some of her incredible roles.
On Laverne & Shirley, she played the landlord, Mrs. Edna Babish, a five-time divorcee who went on to marry Laverne's dad Frank. And on All in the Family, she was their neighbor and Edith's good friend, Irene Lorenzo. Her character worked at Archie's plant amongst men -- she spoke out on how it was unfair she was being paid less. (Still true, by the way, even in real life women make about 77 cents to a man's dollar.) Garrett's character also consoled Edith when she found a lump in her breast, and shared she was a breast cancer surviver. She won a Golden Globe for this role.
The actress also had bit parts on Grey's Anatomy, Boston Public, The Golden Girls, and she won an Emmy for her part on Becker.
She also wrote a book about her life -- Betty Garrett and Other Songs: A Life On Stage and Screen.
Garrett was a widow. Her husband Larry Parks died in 1975, but they had two children -- Andrew who is an actor and Garrett who is a composer. She is survived by her sons, two daughters-in-law, a granddaughter, and she was also Jeff Bridges' godmother.
Check out her rendition of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Red Skelton for the movie Neptune's Daughter. Betty won an Oscar for Best Song for this.
Do you remember Betty Garrett in any of these roles?
