Britney Jean Spears -- I think it's time that we had a little chat. You haven't done anything wrong, per se, besides hiring a dancing double for your new video. But I am going to be straightforward with you when I say that honestly, Brit, I'm getting a little fed up. You. Are. Everywhere.
It's not your fault -- I know. Surprisingly, it's not even your manager's fault. It's your fans. And they're making me sick.
I'm not just talking about on my car radio here. Your new album title, Femme Fatale, has been on the side of my Twitter feed for five days now. While shopping for the perfect Valentine's Day present, I saw a Britney Spears inspired schoolgirl outfit (I wish I was joking). Just last weekend -- I saw the Britney inspired Glee episode during Oxygen's Gleek Marathon, and now your "Hold It Against Me" trailers are taking over my YouTube page.
If you're a Britney fan, you're probably wondering, HEY! What did we do wrong? Well I'm sorry to say, but the answer is everything.
If there wasn't a demand for some serious face-time with the second coming of Madonna (well before Lady Gaga came around, anyway), then Britney wouldn't be absolutely everywhere. It is because of the fans that there are 14 days of trailers leading up to Britney's new video on February 17. Did you read that correctly? FOURTEEN DIFFERENT TRAILERS.
Of course, now that I've clued you in on what's going on in the digital universe -- I'm sure you want a piece for yourself. Exhibit A: Today's trailer for "Hold It Against Me."
See how absurd this is? Don't get me wrong, ladies, I really do love me some Britney. But it's time to be a little real for a second or two. Her new album is nowhere near the biggest thing to happen in the music industry ever, and it's not like she's been M.I.A. for the last few years. Remember Circus? Sure you do. Think "If U Seek Amy" and "Radar." That album was released just over a year ago.
There is no reason at all for us to encourage this extreme level of B. Spears hype. So please, do us all a favor and cool it on the Internet. Oh, and save yourself a little dignity -- definitely don't buy that schoolgirl outfit.
Do you think I'm overreacting? Is there too much hype surrounding Britney Spears?
