Quick, name your favorite dystopian young adult novel. It's Hunger Games, isn't it?
TEAM KATNISS, YOU GUYS.
(If you said Twilight, you need to 1) look up the word "dystopian," and 2) oh my god just stop it with the goddamned vampires already.)
Hunger Games, for those who haven't yet devoured the trilogy by Suzanne Collins, is a post-apocalyptic young adult series that centers around 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen and a Running Man-esque competition in which two teens are picked from each of the 12 districts in Panem (formerly the United States) to fight to the death on live television.
It's a brutal and engaging series, and hugely popular: more than 3.3 million copies of Hunger Games are in print in the U.S. alone.
Lionsgate snapped up worldwide rights to the hotly anticipated film project last year, and the release date for Games to hit the big screen has finally been announced. Book your babysitter now, because you're gonna want to be free on the night of March 23, 2012.
Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) will begin shooting the film in late spring or summer. No cast has yet been announced, although one of the names that has been floated for the critical Katniss role is Academy Award-nominee Hailee Steinfeld. I think she'd be awesome, personally. Jesus, anybody but Kristen Stewart.
Are you a Hunger Games fan? Looking forward to seeing the film version, or suspicious of book-to-movie adaptations?
