Kim Kardashian Should STFU About Teen Pregnancies
MTV, I hope you're ready for a flurry of child support lawsuits. According to famed promoter of abstinence Kim Kardashian, the much-reported Memphis teen pregnancy epidemic is the direct result of too many young girls watching Teen Mom.
Kardashian took to her blog yesterday to do some public hand-wringing, saying,
"I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year! I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing. It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls...but girls, these are not people you should idolize!"
Okay, I'm not saying this isn't an issue worthy of attention, but uhhh ... someone whose fame is the direct result of a sex tape criticizing the media for making sexuality seem "cool" is like a pot in a glass house throwing stones at a kettle while shouting, "YOUR HEXIDECIMAL COLOR CODE IS #000000!"
(Heh. Just a little HTML joke for you there. )
It's not just the sex tape, really. It's the entire uber-sexed Kardashian brand. Who does she think her fans are? Made up entirely of 30-somethings in committed, secure relationships? My guess is that the Kardashian demographic is quite similar to MTV's, and if she's going to start using her pretty little brain to consider what effect "glamorizing" has on young people, she might start by looking at her own hijinks. (Like getting Botox on her reality show, promoting her 14-year-old sister's bikini modeling career, and dating John Mayer, for god's sake.)
Of all the unlikely people, Teen Mom Amber Portwood had a pretty good response to Kim's outcry, telling E! News,
“There’s actually a study that shows since the original 16 and Pregnant aired, the number of teen pregnancies have gone down ... the show reveals how hard it is for all of us. It doesn’t glamorize anything! It shows the heartache we’ve all gone through.”
(BTW, although Memphis's Shelby County does have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation, the "90 students" number seems to be dramatically inflated. In Memphis pregnancy news that's possibly a tad more useful than Kim Kardashian's blogging, local governments are launching a $4.2 million program that will hire social workers to focus on identifying pregnant teens and teen mothers and link them to services.)
What's your take on Kim Kardashian's teen pregnancy comment? Valid point, or vapid source?

I agree with owl_feather.

She's in no position to be chiming in on who young girls should idolize.

Let's not forget the "expert" on the Today show this week, who erroneously reported that Shelby County as *no* OB/GYNs. Which kind of makes me wonder who's been doing my pap smear all these years. - Kalisa (Memphian)

so now encouraging girls to not get pregnant at a young age is BAD thing. i'm not forgiving her instances of stupidity at all, but her sex tape wasn't meant to go global, right?! she messed up a few times but she never brought a kid into the world at a young age, not been able to support them, and tried keeping a volatile relationship with men. these girls who idolize teen mom in way to want to be like them (ie going out and getting pregnant) instead of just watching their lives unfold need someone to tell them this.

What the Today show said there are no OB's in Memphis? Then who the heck delivered my first DS?
But back to Kim, she's ignorant amd everyone knows it. Someone should inform her that she looks a lot prettier when she's not talking.

From this post - "In Memphis pregnancy news that's possibly a tad more useful than Kim Kardashian's blogging, local governments are launching a $4.2 million program that will hire social workers to focus on identifying pregnant teens and teen mothers and link them to services.)"
Sooooo, the government is going to spend tax dollars to hire social workers to ID pregnant teens and teen moms & link them to services that are also supported by tax payers i.e. WIC, foodstamps, free healthcare, etc. Maybe Kim Kardashian is not the correct person, but SOMEONE has got to speak up. These CHILDREN having children are a drain on society. Someone has got to teach them some modesty and morals and self respect.
