Aerosmith Songs on 'American Idol': Who Sang It Best? (Video)

tylerNow that Steven Tyler has formally assumed his judging duties on American Idol, let's take a look back on how some of Aerosmith's songs have fared when performed by AI contestants.

And so I present the good, the so-so, and the hot mess:

First up: Adam Lambert warbling "Cryin":

Here's what the judges had to say:

Randy Jackson: "You're one of the best, dawg, that we've ever had on this stage."

Kara DioGuardi: "How do you hit those notes and still talk the next day? That's what I want to know."

Paula Abdul: "If Steven Tyler was a mentor, I don't think he'd have anything to say. You've set the bar so high in the sky."

Simon Cowell: "Adam, I'm not going to suck up quite as much as the other three ..."  Yet his non-sycophantic remarks concluded with a plea for people to vote for Adam in the final.

Despite the kudos, Adam Lambert was the runner-up to winner Kris Allen on Season 8. His post-Idol album, For Your Entertainment, however, went platinum.

Next, Aussie Michael Johns sings "Dream On":

So what did you think, guys?

Randy: "I don't buy that you are in any way Aerosmith. That's not the singer you are to me."

Paula: "I couldn't disagree more. I think it was perfect song for you to pick ... And the high notes that you hit, I think my chihuahuas are going to come join you on stage."

Simon split the difference. He thought it was a very good performance, but added, "Why I'm slightly with Randy on this is, I don't like it when you do an impersonation of a rock star. It was a little bit wanna-be-ish."

Well that wasn't very nice. And I think he was trying to be complimentary.

Ultimately Johns finished in eighth place on Season 7. His album, Hold Back My Heart, sold a lackluster 20,000 copies.

And finally, the hot mess. Sanjaya Malakar singing "You Really Got Me" accompanied by Aerosmith's own Joe Perry:

This tune was performed on the finale of Season 6 and therefore not subject to judge commentary. It must be noted, though, that he did make a little girl cry.

Sanjaya made it to seventh place in Season 6. Apres Idol? He reached fifth place in Season 2 of the reality show I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. Nice.
