Can You Picture Anne Hathaway As Catwoman?

When I think of Anne Hathaway, I mostly think of the wide-eyed, sweet-faced girl that starred in those Princess Diaries movies. I realize she's held plenty of other roles, including being honored by People as their top 'breakthrough star' in 2001 and one of the 50 Most Beautiful People (according to People). Oh, and I know she starred in Love and Other Drugs, which reportedly included a lot of Nekkid Sexy-Time Anne.

Still, I can't quite imagine her as a fetishy feline fatale, slinking around in a latex bodysuit wielding a leather whip.

It seems Warner Bros. can, though, because they've just announced that Hathaway has officially been cast as Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman, in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

The casting choice brings to an end the slew of rumors that have been flying over who would play the antihero Cat to Christian Bale's Bat. Keira Knightley, Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively, Emily Blunt, Jessica Biel, and Natalie Portman have all reportedly been in the running; wilder speculation included Cher and Megan Fox. Julie Newmar, the definitive 1960s Catwoman, insisted in an interview with the New York Daily News that Angelina Jolie would "own the part."

I tend to agree with Newmar, personally. Overrated or not, there aren't many actresses can pull off ass-kicking sloe-eyed evil like Jolie.

Actually, I can think of about fifty actresses I'd have cast in this particular role before Hathaway, but perhaps she'll surprise us all. Although her other bit of upcoming news, which is that she's signed on for a cameo on Glee as the lesbian aunt of Kurt (Chris Colfer), sounds a lot more up her alley.

I mean, take a look at this video of her appearance on Sesame Street and ask yourself: Batman adversary known for wicked sex appeal and bondage-inspired costumes ... or Gleek?

Angelina Jolie might have been *too* predictable - something Christopher Nolan is not.  Catwoman started out as an innocent --- maybe Anne Hathaway will be able to morph into a believable version.  Time will tell............I love Emily Blunt as the choice, but it's also hard to see her as an ass=kicker due to her frail frame.........

You obviously didn't see her turn at being a drug-addicted, self-centered beeyotch in "Rachel Getting Married." She definitely broke out of the wholesome girl-next-door mold for that one.

Angelina Jolie as Catwoman seems pretty boring and obvious. Plus, her salary would be a major budget buster. I'd rather see some relative unknown get the part. Not that it matters to me. I'll be too busy drooling over Christian Bale to notice...

I think she could do it.  She has a range that most actresses could never achieve and she can change on a whim.

I like her and think she is really talented. I thought she was great in Brokeback Mountain too. She has definitely come a long way from her Princess Diaries days and I think she has a lot of range. But bottom line for me really is, I trust Christopher Nolan. If he likes it, I like it. People were scratching their heads over the Heath Ledger casting but we don't hear much about that these days.

Heath Ledger was a better actor than Anne Hathaway, period. I am baffled by this choice, but I agree Jolie would have been too predictable and would have steered the movie in a completely different direction. I think Rachel Weisz would have been perfect (see "The Constant Gardner"). As for Nolan, well we need to remember that he also cast Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawson, a glaring mistake made even more evident when Maggie Gyllenhaal reprised the role in the sequel. While I think Hathaway has come a long way since her Disney films, I do not think she ha the chops or the sexuality to play Catwoman.

No one liked Heath Ledger when that first came out, either. And he, was just, well, words cannot describe.

Posted today on the God_Damn_Batman Twitter Feed: And Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? Best news I've heard all day. I'm a HUGE Princess Diaries fan.

(and if you don't already follow that one, you're so going to want to) :)

I don't know what it is but I don't like Anne Hathaway.

One day when Anne is clinging from one magic script role to another, she will cooly regard the illuminated billboard in front of her and gently purr that she always knew she was destined to be our collective 'Joker.'

If only they could make a remake of Anne’s life…

Agreed. She might have the latex bondage bod, but, not the sultry, siren voice or persona so essential to the character. Her voice, and somewhat her acting style, are still going thru that awkward teen-geek stage, imo.
