Britney Spears New Song: Catchy Tune But Lousy Lyrics (Video)

Emily Abbate

Britney Spears Hold it Against MeBritney is back at it again with her new single "Hold It Against Me." The first track off of her seventh studio album, currently untitled, doesn't make the future look too promising. Actually, it looks seriously grim.

Why? Well, let's take a look at a snippet of the lyrics, shall we?

'Cause you feel like paradise
I need a vacation tonight.
So if I said I want your body now
Would you hold it against me?

Really -- as the "Princess of Pop," that's the best you could come up with? I'd laugh in a man's face if he tried to use that line on me. I'd actually be embarrassed for him.

Personally, I'd rather watch the Britney episode of Glee eight times over. Judge for yourself:

Who knows, maybe the track will grow on me -- but I doubt it. The song is done entirely in the same four or five notes, almost begging me to press pause. And although I do like the way Spears breaks it down toward the end, it's just not enough to make up for how horribly awful these lyrics are.

Remember Brit's snake-holding escapades in "I'm a Slave for You" and her school girl chic in "Hit Me Baby One More Time"? Neither of those were lyrical pieces of genius. BUT -- they will always be classic Britney because they defined a pop era. If anything's for sure, "Hold It Against Me" will need an amazing music video to find any sort of redemption. Could it be that Brit's past her prime?

The track is officially on sale tomorrow night at 12 midnight, EST.

What do you think about Brit's new song?
